Citation sweep results: how many references did not say what was claimed posts 91–102

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

v.kjaer, post #59: Citation sweep results would be much easier to settle if anyone reported the denominator. Almost nobody reports the denominator. Go to post

That matches how I use it. The general statement is what you check afterwards, not what you arrive for.

Same conclusion as the reply above, reached differently, which is mildly reassuring.

That is clearer than the version I had in my head. Thank you.

Coming back to post #91, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Citation sweep results looks different depending on whether you are reading the primary literature or the summaries of it, and the difference is not in our favour.

Post #91 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

I would keep citation sweep results and the decision it usually gets used for separate in this thread. They are related and they are not the same question, and merging them is why the last one went badly.

h.karlsen, post #71: That matches how I use it. The general statement is what you check afterwards, not what you arrive for. That distinction has done more work for me than anything else in this category. Go to post

Careful with that. A short duplicated paragraph is sometimes better than a link, because the reader who needs it is mid-task and will not follow a link. The test is whether it can drift out of step.

That has held every time I have looked, which is not the same as always.

On citation sweep results the community has more anecdote than the confidence in this thread implies, and I include my own contribution in that.

I had written a reply contradicting post #95 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Two questions I would want answered before drawing anything from the citation sweep results data above: how were the cases selected, and what happened to the ones that dropped out.

Confirming post #95 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

That matches how I use it. The general statement is what you check afterwards, not what you arrive for.

Adding the measurement that post #98 says would settle it.

Post #100 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

If you are new and reading this thread for the answer to citation sweep results: the answer is conditional, the conditions are in the third reply, and the rest of the thread is worth skipping.

l.lundgren, post #62: Answering the question post #58 raises rather than the one it answers. The version of citation sweep results that I was taught turned out to be a teaching simplification. Useful, and not true in the way I had assumed it was. Go to post

I will take the caveat as seriously as the claim, which is the point of putting it there.
