Follow-up: Documentation that appears only after payment posts 61–88

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

e.ferreira, post #17: What I would check first on Documentation is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph. Go to post

Documentation quality as a signal: a supplier that reports method identifiers, distinguishes specification from result, and states the counter-ion form is telling you something about systems behind the document. A certificate that is a number and a signature tells you less.

Adding the caveat now so it does not have to be extracted later.

unit_conversion, post #31: A note on how Documentation gets discussed rather than on Documentation itself: the confident posts get the replies and the careful ones get ignored, and the careful ones have been right more often. Go to post

A stock listing that never changes and a lead time that never varies are both worth noticing. Real operations have variation in them.

This follows post #62 rather than contradicting it.

I would call the community position on Documentation likely rather than established, and I would be comfortable defending that hedge.

Worth separating two things that post #60 runs together.

One more thing on Documentation that took me far too long to see: the two figures people quote are not measuring the same quantity. Once you notice that, the apparent contradiction disappears.

Where somebody posts a concern, ask what would resolve it before arguing about it. Half of these threads end with a document nobody had asked for.

I am aware this is the third time this month I have made this point.

m.onwuka, post #26: One caution on Documentation: everything above assumes the underlying documentation is what it claims to be. That assumption is doing real work and is rarely stated. Go to post

What I can speak to on Documentation is narrow, so I will keep it narrow rather than generalising from it. Beyond that boundary I do not know.

The strongest single signal available cheaply is what happens when you ask a technical question. A quantitative answer inside a working day is difficult to fake at scale.

dexa_twice_yearly, post #33: Answering the question post #31 raises rather than the one it answers. I read the earlier replies on Documentation twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected. Go to post

Narrowing post #66, because the general version has more than one answer.

On Documentation I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated.

Everything in post #69 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

The honest answer on Documentation is that it depends, and the useful part is the list of what it depends on. Four items, in rough order of how much they matter.

Most people get the first two right and then argue about the fourth.

Exaggerated claims without documentation: every compound has limits. No peptide is "100% pure" because purity is measured to finite precision. A supplier claiming implausible perfection without backing evidence is overreaching.

Narrowing post #71, because the general version has more than one answer.

Speaking only to Documentation as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect.

c.delgadoTL213 May 2025#73

Post #71 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

The useful distinction on Documentation is between what was measured and what was inferred from it. Both end up in the same sentence and only one of them has error bars.

The most useful contribution to this subcategory is a resolved case written up with the resolution, because the unresolved ones are all anyone remembers.

That is the version I use. It may not be the version that is correct.

e.ndiaye, post #19: I had read the opposite somewhere and cannot now find where, which tells me something. Go to post

Answering the question post #71 raises rather than the one it answers.

For anyone finding this later: the short answer on Documentation is that it depends on one thing, and the rest of the thread is people identifying which thing.

citation_peak, post #3: Picking up the opening post: that is the part I would want checked first. What I would tell a new member reading about Documentation for the first time: the confident posts are not the reliable ones, and the reliable ones are longer. Go to post

The arithmetic in post #75 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

I keep a log for Documentation specifically because my memory of it turned out to be systematically wrong in one direction. Six weeks of notes cost nothing and settled it.

Nothing here should be read as an accusation against a named company, and the guidelines exist so that reports remain reports.

Worth reading the earlier posts in this thread before acting on mine.

Unresponsiveness: a supplier that does not reply to reasonable requests for documentation or clarification is showing you something about how they operate.

Two things can be true about Documentation at once: the mechanism is plausible and the evidence for the size of the effect is thin. Most of the argument here is people defending the first against attacks on the second.

What would change my mind on Documentation is a second dataset collected by someone with no stake in the first. Until then I hold it loosely and I would rather say so than pretend to more.

Post #78 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

The guidelines draw that line for a practical reason as much as a fair one: reports accumulate into something useful and allegations do not.

On Documentation, the part that usually goes wrong is that the question is asked as though it has one answer. It has a range, and the width of the range is the interesting bit.

If you can post the two or three numbers you are working from, several people here will check the arithmetic rather than argue about the conclusion.

Two claims get bundled together under Documentation and they need separating. The descriptive one — this is what was observed — is usually well supported. The causal one — this is why — usually is not.

Almost every disagreement in threads like this one dissolves once you say which of the two you are making.

On post #82 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Prices well below the rest of the market are a fact rather than a finding. They are worth noting and they do not establish anything on their own.

A request rather than an answer: could whoever has the primary source for Documentation post it? I have seen the claim three times this month and each version had lost a qualifier.

Before the thread moves on from Documentation — what is the sample size behind the claim? I am not being difficult; I have seen the same figure quoted from an n of four and from an n of four hundred.
