Second pass at: Food noise reducing and the disorientation that can follow

Second pass at: Food noise reducing and the disorientation that can follow — setting out what I have, and where I think it stops being reliable.

Two things I would like separated before anyone answers on Food noise, because they get bundled and then argued about as one thing.

The first is descriptive: what has actually been observed, by whom, and how. The second is causal: why. I am asking about the first only.

Offering a way to settle Food noise rather than another opinion about it. Two measurements, taken the same way, a fortnight apart. If the difference is within the noise, the question was not answerable at this precision.

Nothing here is medical advice and several members in this subcategory say plainly that they are describing their own experience only.

I have changed my mind on this once already, so take it as current rather than settled.

Narrowing post #3, because the general version has more than one answer.

Where the Food noise discussion usually stalls is that nobody wants to say "I do not know" and everyone is willing to say "it varies". Those are the same sentence with different clothes on.

This settles it for me, at least until somebody posts a reason it should not.

Where a member is finding this hard, the useful reply is usually a question rather than an answer, and this subcategory does that well.

I have three months of notes on Food noise and the honest summary is that the trend is real and the week-to-week numbers are noise. I nearly drew the opposite conclusion from the first fortnight.

The bit of Food noise that nobody enjoys is that the answer changes depending on what you are trying to decide with it. Say what the decision is and the thread will converge.

Where I part company with post #7, and it is a narrow parting.

Social and relationship impacts: weight change affects how others perceive and interact with a person. Those impacts are real and can be psychologically significant.

A modest claim, modestly supported.

Post #7 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

I read the earlier replies on Food noise twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.

Confirming post #8 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

Where the Food noise reasoning breaks down for me is the step from the group result to the individual case. That step is almost never argued for.

I had written a reply contradicting post #10 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Maintenance brings a different set of psychological questions from loss, and the discussion here is much thinner on that phase.

The social side of this — how other people respond to visible change — comes up constantly and has nothing to do with pharmacology.

I think the Food noise question is answerable and has not been answered, which is a more optimistic position than most of this thread.

Post #12 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

What I would tell a new member reading about Food noise for the first time: the confident posts are not the reliable ones, and the reliable ones are longer.

Expectations set by other people's reported trajectories are a documented source of distress, and the trajectories posted are not representative.

Written in the hope of being told what I have missed.

Distinguishing three things in the Food noise discussion that keep getting used interchangeably: the observation, the proposed mechanism, and the recommendation that gets attached to both.

The strongest argument against my own position on Food noise, stated as well as I can state it, since nobody else has yet.

If you are in crisis, contact a local emergency or crisis service rather than posting. A volunteer forum cannot help and waiting costs time.

Take it as a starting point and not as a specification.

An update on my earlier Food noise post: the pattern held for another six weeks and then stopped, which I did not predict and cannot explain.

Taking Food noise seriously for a moment rather than deflecting: the honest position is that the community has observations and no controlled comparison, and those two things support very different sentences.

Motivation and expectation: starting with clear motivation and realistic expectations about what will happen and when helps with psychological adjustment.

For what it is worth, the same held on the two occasions I checked.

On post #19 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Food noise is well covered in the tag pages, and the older discussions are better than the recent ones because they were argued out properly. Worth twenty minutes before adding to this one.

Picking up post #23: that is the part I would want checked first.

Reading back through the Food noise threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

Correct me on the arithmetic if it is wrong; I would rather know.

q.zhao_qa, post #25: Support and community: some people process weight change through community (online or in-person). Others prefer privacy. Knowing what you need and seeking it proactively helps. If the premise is wrong, everything after it is decoration. Go to post

Worth separating two things that post #23 runs together.

If someone has run Food noise properly I would rather read that than my own reconstruction of it. Posting mine only because the thread has gone quiet.

Post #27 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Where a member is finding this hard, the useful reply is usually a question rather than an answer, and this subcategory does that well.

If anyone can point at the primary source I would be grateful.

Building on post #27 rather than restating it.

I would put moderate confidence on the mainstream reading of Food noise and no more. That is not scepticism for its own sake; it is where the sourcing actually stops.
