Topic summary

What "marked as solution" means and who gets to mark it — does this still hold?

This is a generated summary. It shows the 9 most-liked posts from a topic of 75, in their original order, with the accepted answer included where one exists. It is a reading aid and it will miss nuance — the full topic is the record.

e.kjeldsen, post #2: Marked solutions are the site's way of saying that someone asked a good question and someone else gave an answer that actually worked. It is not a competition and it does not appear on your record — it is just how the site learns which topics stay useful six months later. Go to post

The Lounge is a real category rather than a dumping ground. The sourcing rule still applies there, which surprises people, but the register is looser and nobody minds a digression.

Staff post. Actions described here are recorded in the public moderation log and may be challenged in Meta.

Welcome. Two practical notes from staff. Your first few posts are rate-limited, which is an anti-spam measure and not a comment on you, and it lifts on its own. If you hit it and have something to add, edit the post you already made.

I would want to see it done twice before believing it once.

Good question, well framed, and I would like to see it answered properly.

SHermansen, post #11: Trust levels accumulate over time and they give you access to small things like the ability to edit your own posts without a timestamp. They are not a status symbol and they do not make you more right. Someone at trust level zero with a good question gets better answers than someone at trust level four with a bad one. The interesting… Go to post

Reading rather than answering, but this is the post I would point somebody at.

On the reading order question specifically: start with the how-to-ask materials in this category, then read the one to three subcategories where your main questions live. The rest will be discoverable by tag once you understand the structure.

Do not feel obliged to reply to every reply on your own topic. A single "that answered it" and a marked solution is the most useful thing you can do for the next person who searches.

ma.nascimento, post #32: The FAQ link in the sidebar is maintained and worth ten hours of forum browsing. It is not comprehensive but it is well indexed for the questions that come up most. I am describing what is, rather than arguing for what should be. Go to post

Likes here mean "this helped", not "I agree". People like posts that argue against them, and that is deliberate.

The category structure looks heavier than it is. There are twenty top-level categories and you will use three of them. Find those three, mute the rest for a month, and come back to the others when a question sends you there.
