[2026 update] Long-time reader, first-time poster posts 31–51

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1 · go to the accepted answer.

If you are arriving from somewhere louder, the pace here will feel slow. A topic can sit for two days and then get a reply that is worth the wait. That is the design working.

Thank you — that answers what I came here to find out.

Woodhouse, post #2: Long-time reader: I have looked for the primary source twice and failed twice. Either it does not exist or it is somewhere I do not know to look, and I would like to know which. Go to post

On Long-time reader: the maintained page in the documentation commons covers the general case with citations and a review date, which is more reliable than any reply here including this one.

Welcome. Nobody will mind you asking something basic. The people most likely to answer are the ones who remember not knowing it.

Glad to see another member from outside the usual regions. The access and regional categories are thin for anywhere that is not the UK, EU or North America, and a dated first-hand account is worth more than any summary.

Where I have landed on Long-time reader, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it.

Worth separating Long-time reader as a question about the compound from Long-time reader as a question about the documentation. They get answered by different people and only one of them is answerable here.

cohort_notes, post #6: Good to have another set of eyes on the wiki posts. Community wiki editing is open at trust level three and the queue of small corrections is permanently longer than the people fixing them. Go to post

Following up: if you introduce yourself and someone asks a follow-up question, you can reply here or in a direct message depending on what feels right.

Reading it again, the caveat matters more than the finding.

Acknowledging rather than arguing. The reasoning holds as far as I can follow it.

Two things can be true about Long-time reader at once: the mechanism is plausible and the evidence for the size of the effect is thin. Most of the argument here is people defending the first against attacks on the second.

Long-time reader came up in a thread eighteen months ago and was answered well. I cannot find it, which is itself the problem, so here is the reconstruction.

Thank you for taking the time. That was more work than a reply usually is.

No spam: introductions are not a place to advertise commercial products or services. That is a rules violation.

A note on how Long-time reader gets discussed rather than on Long-time reader itself: the confident posts get the replies and the careful ones get ignored, and the careful ones have been right more often.

The arithmetic on Long-time reader is the easy part and it is where the errors are, which is an uncomfortable combination. Show your working and someone will catch it.

Community culture: introductions give you a sense of who is here. Reading a few introduces you to the people and the tone of the community.

This is the sort of thing that ought to be settled and apparently is not.

If you are new and reading this thread for the answer to Long-time reader: the answer is conditional, the conditions are in the third reply, and the rest of the thread is worth skipping.

Where the Long-time reader discussion usually stalls is that nobody wants to say "I do not know" and everyone is willing to say "it varies". Those are the same sentence with different clothes on.

Clinician voices are genuinely welcome and are asked to be explicit about the line. Several members here say plainly in every post that they are describing general information and not advising anybody, and nobody finds that tedious.

What I can speak to on Long-time reader is narrow, so I will keep it narrow rather than generalising from it. Beyond that boundary I do not know.

j.mwangi, post #17: Distinguishing three things in the Long-time reader discussion that keep getting used interchangeably: the observation, the proposed mechanism, and the recommendation that gets attached to both. Go to post

Long-time reader is a good example of a question where the honest answer is boring and the interesting answers are unsupported. I would go with boring.
