What I would tell a new member reading about New subcategory for the first time: the confident posts are not the reliable ones, and the reliable ones are longer.

Where the New subcategory reasoning breaks down for me is the step from the group result to the individual case. That step is almost never argued for.

Adding the measurement that post #48 says would settle it.

New subcategory was covered in the wiki last year and the page has a review date on it, which is a better starting point than my memory of a thread.

This is the answer, and the reason it is the answer is the more useful part.

Picking up post #85: that is the part I would want checked first.

Practical experience of New subcategory, offered as one case with the conditions stated, not as a general finding. Conditions first, because they are what make it interpretable.

I read post #85 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

What I would check first on New subcategory is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph.

Post #124 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Housekeeping announcement. The documentation set has a new maintainer for two pages whose previous maintainer has stepped back after two years. Both pages have been reviewed at handover rather than assumed current.

Not a conclusion. A place to stand while looking for one.

The rare case here is the one that costs somebody a week, though, and the common case costs everyone ten seconds. I think the trade is clearly correct.

The general case is well covered; this is the awkward specific one.

Thank you for announcing it in advance rather than after. The number of places that do the reverse is remarkable.
