A friction point in the promotion workflow — the long version

On the subject in the title: A friction point in the promotion workflow — the long version Working notes rather than a conclusion.

A narrow question about friction point, deliberately narrow, because the broad version has been asked here four times and produced four long threads and no answer.

One question, stated units, stated method, and what I have already ruled out.

Staff post. Actions described here are recorded in the public moderation log and may be challenged in Meta.

Reproduced. Thank you for the second-load detail — that narrows it considerably and it would have taken a long time to find without it. It will be recorded in the log when it is fixed rather than quietly.

Both noted and both reasonable. Staff will not promise a date — everybody here is a volunteer and the queue is long — but this is the sort of change that gets made because somebody described it precisely rather than generally.

I have changed my mind on this once already, so take it as current rather than settled.

Worth separating two things that the opening post runs together.

Feature request framed as feedback: the category list is long enough that a first-time reader cannot tell which four categories carry most of the traffic. A count next to each would fix that without changing anything structural.

If it helps: the failure mode here is usually boring rather than dramatic.

That is the distinction I keep failing to hold on to. Written down now.

I had written a reply contradicting post #4 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Reporting a real defect: on a long topic the jump-to-post link scrolls to the right post but the highlight does not fire on the first load. Second load is fine. Reproducible on my end, twice.

If that reads as pedantic, it is, and it has saved me twice.
