Fibre intake when total intake falls, and the constipation link — one year on

Posting this under the heading it deserves: Fibre intake when total intake falls, and the constipation link — one year on Everything below is what sits behind that.

An honest uncertainty about Fibre intake rather than a disguised assertion.

I do not know the answer and I have not been able to find one. What I have is the shape of the question, which may be worth more than my guess at the answer.

Self-reported intake is optimistic by a consistent margin in the published comparisons, which is worth applying to your own numbers.

The interesting part of this is the exception, and I do not understand the exception.

Adding the measurement that the opening post says would settle it.

Tracking intake for a week rather than permanently is usually enough to find out whether there is a problem. Permanent tracking has its own costs.

It is one reading of the data and not the only reasonable one.

Post #2 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Distribution across the day appears to matter less than total for most outcomes, and it matters practically because a single large meal is harder when appetite is reduced.

Small point, but it is the one that usually catches people.

Where somebody reports losing strength, intake and training stimulus are the first two things to look at rather than the compound.

If that reads as pedantic, it is, and it has saved me twice.

Where I part company with post #2, and it is a narrow parting.

Micronutrient adequacy becomes a real question at very low total intake and is much less discussed than protein.

On reflection I would soften that slightly.

The arithmetic in post #4 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

Fibre and fluid tend to fall alongside protein when intake drops, and the constipation reported here follows from that as much as from the mechanism.

Renal considerations around higher protein intake apply to people with existing renal impairment and are frequently generalised beyond that population.

Post #8 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Eating anything at all: on substantial appetite suppression, eating enough total calories to maintain lean mass is the priority. Protein comes second to total intake.

It is worth stating the boring hypothesis before the interesting one.

Fibre: adequate fibre intake supports fullness and gut motility, both of which matter during the gastrointestinal effects of these compounds. High fibre on top of appetite suppression requires attention to hydration and gradual introduction.

Post #9 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Published guidance on protein during weight loss is reasonably consistent and is easy to find, which makes this one of the better-evidenced practical questions here.

The answer changed when I changed how I was measuring, which was informative.

s.oyelaran, post #12: Taking post #9 at face value and following it one step further. Protein supplements: whey, casein, and plant-based protein powders can help hit targets when whole-food intake is limited by appetite. Protein quality (all essential amino acids) matters more than form. The mechanism is plausible, which is not the same as established. Go to post

Timing of protein: spreading protein intake across the day, with some at each meal, is more practical than trying to hit the whole target at one sitting on suppressed appetite.

Reading rather than answering, but this is the post I would point somebody at.
