Five questions in one post gets you one answer — how to split them posts 61–90

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Post #60 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

The question underneath five questions is usually "how would I tell?" rather than "what is true?", and that one has a method attached to it.

Write down what you would expect to see under each hypothesis before you collect anything. If they predict the same observation, collecting it will not help.

Helpful, and easy to find again, which is half of what a good reply is.

Disagreeing with an answer you got: cite what you disagree with, say what contradicts it, and ask which one holds. Do not open with "I think you are wrong". Lead with the evidence.

The number is defensible. The precision I gave it is not.

e.mikkelsen, post #50: Timeline questions need the timeline. Dates, in order, with what happened on each. "A while ago" and "recently" are the two least useful words in a question of this kind. Not the whole picture, but the part of it I can speak to. Go to post

Post #63 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Context that matters: compound, how long in, current dose, relevant history. Context that does not matter: how you feel, your hopes for the outcome, your medical history beyond what affects this specific question. The first set gets you answered. The second set makes the reply longer without making it better.

Where I have landed on five questions, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it.

"Has anyone had this happen" gets you anecdotes. "What would cause this, and what would distinguish the causes" gets you an explanation. The second question is almost always the one you wanted.

If this contradicts something upthread, the upthread version may well be the better one.

On post #66 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Lab result questions: state the result, the reference interval, and what else is on the same panel. A single flag on a single draw is usually uninformative without context.

Asking a follow-up: new topic or reply in the old one? If the answer depends on the previous post, reply. If it is a question that makes sense without the previous post, new topic. The second gets faster answers.

That is one dataset and I would not build a rule on it.

mira.patel, post #8: Staff note on titles, since it comes up. We retitle topics fairly often, always leaving the original in the first post and always logging it. It is not a criticism of the wording — it is that a title is how somebody finds this in eighteen months. I would call that likely rather than established. Go to post

Edit the first post rather than adding the missing detail in reply nine. People arriving later read the first post and stop.

Second-hand, so weight it accordingly.

A weak preference rather than a position.

An honest declaration on five questions: I have a prior here and it is strong enough that you should weight what I say downward. Stating it rather than hiding it.

Where I part company with post #69, and it is a narrow parting.

Five questions in one post gets you one answer: the easiest one, usually not the one you needed most. Post them separately or pick the one that depends on the others least and ask that one first.

If the answer you got does not fit your case, say which part does not fit rather than restating the question. Otherwise the next reply is the same as the last one.

The variance between people here is larger than the effect being discussed.

Number your questions if there is more than one. It sounds fussy. It means the answer can be numbered back, and you find out which one nobody addressed.

Speaking for myself and not for anyone else who has posted here.

g.tamm, post #16: Say what you want out of the answer. "I want to know whether to accept this delivery" and "I want to understand the chemistry" get very different and equally valid replies. Go to post

I had written a reply contradicting post #73 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Arithmetic questions: write out the steps. "I have a 10 mg vial, I added 2 mL, I want a 0.25 mg dose, and I get this number for the syringe mark" is answerable. "How many units" is not.

Filing this under things that are true until someone shows me otherwise.

I read post #77 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Staff note on titles, since it comes up. We retitle topics fairly often, always leaving the original in the first post and always logging it. It is not a criticism of the wording — it is that a title is how somebody finds this in eighteen months.

A qualification I should have led with rather than closed on.

Chromatography questions need the method before anything else: column, gradient, wavelength, injection volume. A purity figure with no method attached cannot be discussed, only repeated.

I think the five questions question is answerable and has not been answered, which is a more optimistic position than most of this thread.

Adding the measurement that post #82 says would settle it.

Post #80 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Nobody minds being asked to explain a term. The people who use them most are the quickest to define them, and a question that stops to ask is usually a question that gets a better answer.

Same conclusion as the reply above, reached differently, which is mildly reassuring.

Post the arithmetic you already did. Half the questions here are answered by someone spotting which line of your working is wrong, and that is impossible if you only give the answer you got.

Happy to be the one who is wrong here if it settles the question.

Answering the question post #84 raises rather than the one it answers.

The specific question in the title is more useful than you might think. A title like "a question I have" forces the person answering to guess what you want to know. A title with the actual question gets you an answer in two hours instead of two days.

Post #86 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

When you quote a figure from somewhere else, say where from. Not as a formality — the answer frequently depends on whether the number came from a certificate, an independent report or a forum post.

Take it as a starting point and not as a specification.

Coming back to post #88, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Questions you cannot explain: "I cannot say why I am asking this, but is this compound stable at room temperature?" is more productive than no question at all. People here know that some questions cannot be asked in public and they will work with that constraint.

One more caveat and then I will stop qualifying: the sample selected itself.
