Revisiting: Maintainer handover: how it works posts 31–58

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1 · go to the accepted answer.

Picking up post #28: that is the part I would want checked first.

What I can speak to on Maintainer handover is narrow, so I will keep it narrow rather than generalising from it. Beyond that boundary I do not know.

eire_reader, post #9: Worth separating two things that post #5 runs together. The reason Maintainer handover is hard to answer is that the obvious measurement and the relevant quantity are not the same thing, and substituting one for the other is silent. Go to post

That matches how I use it. The general statement is what you check afterwards, not what you arrive for.

Revision disputes: if you disagree with an edit a maintainer made, discussing it here invites resolution rather than conflict.

Good question, well framed, and I would like to see it answered properly.

Maintainer handover is a question about a distribution, not about a value, and treating it as a value is what produces the confident wrong answers.

g.tanaka, post #14: The most useful thing anyone has posted about Maintainer handover in this category was a table of what had been measured and by whom. That is what I would want again. Go to post

I would call the community position on Maintainer handover likely rather than established, and I would be comfortable defending that hedge.

Cross-referencing: if two pages should reference each other but do not, suggesting the cross-reference helps the maintainer see the connection.

I am not the right person to answer the follow-up to this.

I read the earlier replies on Maintainer handover twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.

e.steiner, post #4: Careful with that. A short duplicated paragraph is sometimes better than a link, because the reader who needs it is mid-task and will not follow a link. The test is whether it can drift out of step. Small point, but it is the one that usually catches people. Go to post

Evidence synthesis: if you think a page should cover recent evidence or a new development, suggesting specific content helps the maintainer prioritise updates.

The reasoning is more useful than the number, which is why I have shown it.

Post #39 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

The claim about Maintainer handover upthread is stronger than its source supports. I have read the source. The source says "associated with" and the post says "causes".

Building on post #39 rather than restating it.

Authority: if you think a page needs input from someone with specific expertise, suggesting that person helps the maintainer recruit contributors.

I would rather be precise about what I do not know than vague about what I do.

The documentation on Maintainer handover is better than this thread and I say that as someone who has posted in the thread.

Maintenance note. This document is due for review and the maintainer has asked for a second reader before the date rather than after it. If you use this page regularly, this is the moment your objection is cheapest to act on.

Second-hand on Maintainer handover, so weight it accordingly — someone whose method I trust told me this and I have not verified it myself.

Offering a way to settle Maintainer handover rather than another opinion about it. Two measurements, taken the same way, a fortnight apart. If the difference is within the noise, the question was not answerable at this precision.

I have written this out at length because the short version keeps being misread.

Where the Maintainer handover discussion usually stalls is that nobody wants to say "I do not know" and everyone is willing to say "it varies". Those are the same sentence with different clothes on.

Taking post #50 at face value and following it one step further.

Volunteering for the review on this one. I use it monthly, I have a list of three things that have aged badly, and I am willing to be named as the second maintainer.

Somebody will have a better source than mine, and I hope they post it.

Post #48 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

An honest declaration on Maintainer handover: I have a prior here and it is strong enough that you should weight what I say downward. Stating it rather than hiding it.

Trying to state the Maintainer handover position in a way that someone who disagrees would recognise as fair, because I do not think the version in this thread passes that test.

priorauth_notes, post #12: On post #8 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification. Volunteering for the review on this one. I use it monthly, I have a list of three things that have aged badly, and I am willing to be named as the second maintainer. That matches what I was told, which is not the same as knowing it. I have said this before in a thread nobody could find, so it is worth repeating.

Worth separating two things that post #52 runs together.

Review dates: each maintained page has a review date (the date by which it should be checked). If a page is past its review date, flagging it here alerts the maintainer.

I have kept the units in throughout, for the obvious reason.

Small methodological point on Maintainer handover: repeating a measurement is cheap and resolves most of what is being argued about here at no cost to anyone.

Where I would push back on the Maintainer handover consensus is the confidence, not the direction. The direction looks right. The confidence is borrowed.
