Syringe barrel size: common sizes are 0.3 mL, 0.5 mL, and 1.0 mL. Smaller barrels are more legible for small doses. Larger barrels hold larger volumes. Choose based on your dose.

Not a conclusion. A place to stand while looking for one.

What is documented is narrow. What is inferred from it is broad. The gap between them is where every argument here lives.

A definition problem is doing most of the work in this 0.3 ml versus 0.5 ml discussion. Once the term is pinned down I suspect the disagreement mostly goes away and what is left is small.

U-100 means the barrel is graduated for a solution containing one hundred units of insulin per millilitre. For anything that is not insulin, the units are simply hundredths of a millilitre.

Noting that the question and the thing people usually mean by it are different.

The arithmetic in post #33 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

What I would check first on 0.3 ml versus 0.5 ml is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph.

Typical residual is 0.01 to 0.02 mL for an insulin syringe with a fixed needle. Accounting for it matters if precision matters. If anyone can point at the primary source I would be grateful. A detachable luer needle plus hub can retain enough volume to matter. Whether it matters to you depends on your dose, and the arithmetic is worth doing once.

If anyone has run this properly I would rather read that than my own guess.

Post #37 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

0.3 ml versus 0.5 ml has a well-known answer and a correct answer, and the interesting work is establishing that they are the same. Nobody has done that here yet.

Picking up post #42: that is the part I would want checked first.

One more thing on 0.3 ml versus 0.5 ml that took me far too long to see: the two figures people quote are not measuring the same quantity. Once you notice that, the apparent contradiction disappears.

U-100 means the barrel is graduated for a solution containing one hundred units of insulin per millilitre. For anything that is not insulin, the units are simply hundredths of a millilitre.

I have seen it go both ways, which is why I hedge.

Reading the barrel at eye level matters more than any equipment choice. Parallax at a shallow angle is enough to shift a reading by a graduation.

One case, stated as one case.

A methods point on 0.3 ml versus 0.5 ml rather than a substantive one: if the comparison is not like for like, the difference you are measuring is the difference in method.

Barrel size determines resolution and nothing else. A 0.3 mL barrel and a 1 mL barrel deliver the same volume equally well; the smaller one lets you see what you are delivering.

0.3 ml versus 0.5 ml: I would want to see the raw numbers rather than the summary before agreeing. Summaries lose exactly the information that would settle this.

Picking up post #56: that is the part I would want checked first.

Fixed versus detachable needles: insulin syringes usually have fixed needles (no dead volume loss to the hub). Luer-lock syringes use detachable needles (more dead volume). Fixed needles are preferred for small doses.

Same conclusion as the reply above, reached differently, which is mildly reassuring.

The claim about 0.3 ml versus 0.5 ml upthread is stronger than its source supports. I have read the source. The source says "associated with" and the post says "causes".
