Posting this under the heading it deserves: Naming conventions for research peptides and the confusion they cause Everything below is what sits behind that.

I was wrong about naming conventions for research peptides in a thread last spring and I would like to correct it publicly rather than quietly.

The error was in the units, which changed the conclusion by an order of magnitude. Setting out the corrected version, and the way I now check for that class of mistake.

The failure mode on naming conventions for research peptides is boring rather than dramatic. It is almost always the step everyone assumes was done correctly because it is too simple to get wrong.

Research use only, not approved for human use, and in this subcategory the compounds vary enormously in how much is known about them. It is worth establishing which end of that range a specific compound sits at before anything else.

That has held every time I have looked, which is not the same as always.

Thymosin alpha-1 has a regulatory history in several jurisdictions and a real clinical literature, which puts it in a different evidential category from most of its neighbours here.

Anyone who has looked at this more carefully, please correct the record.

This follows post #4 rather than contradicting it.

One more thing on naming conventions for research peptides that took me far too long to see: the two figures people quote are not measuring the same quantity. Once you notice that, the apparent contradiction disappears.

Naming conventions for research peptides is a question about a distribution, not about a value, and treating it as a value is what produces the confident wrong answers.

Solubility varies far more across this subcategory than within the incretins. A compound that needs a specific diluent or a specific pH is not being difficult; it has a solubility profile and the supplier should state it.

That holds under the stated conditions and I have stated them.

How to research a compound with no human data: mechanistic plausibility is one input. Preclinical data is another. The honest position is that you are reasoning from theory, not from evidence, and the track record of such reasoning is unimpressive when tested against actual outcomes.

I looked this up rather than remembered it, which is the right order.

That is what I would do. It may not be what is correct.

Where I part company with post #9, and it is a narrow parting.

Naming conventions for research peptides cause confusion because suppliers do not follow a standard. The same compound gets different names from different suppliers. If you are researching something, confirming the sequence or mass is more reliable than confirming the name.

If anyone can point at the primary source I would be grateful.

Adding the boring version of naming conventions for research peptides, because the interesting version keeps getting posted and the boring one is usually right.

Check the ordinary explanations, in order, and stop when one of them accounts for what you are seeing. Most of the time the second one does.

Where I have landed on naming conventions for research peptides, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it.

The question underneath naming conventions for research peptides is usually "how would I tell?" rather than "what is true?", and that one has a method attached to it.

Write down what you would expect to see under each hypothesis before you collect anything. If they predict the same observation, collecting it will not help.

Confirming post #13 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

This subcategory exists because some people will research compounds outside the main groups discussed here. The standard of evidence and honesty about its limits applies to everything discussed, not just to approved drugs.

If anyone has run this properly I would rather read that than my own guess.

Fragment compounds — where the material is part of a larger natural protein — should be identified by sequence rather than by name, because the naming in this space is inconsistent between suppliers.

Not a conclusion. A place to stand while looking for one.

Nobody has said the unglamorous part of naming conventions for research peptides yet, so: most of the variation is explained by things that are boring to write about and easy to check.

On naming conventions for research peptides, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one.

Adding the measurement that post #22 says would settle it.

Peptides with cyclic or disulphide-constrained structures behave differently on a column and differently in solution from linear ones. A purity result should say which the material is.

Post #22 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

The version of naming conventions for research peptides that I was taught turned out to be a teaching simplification. Useful, and not true in the way I had assumed it was.

One caution on naming conventions for research peptides: everything above assumes the underlying documentation is what it claims to be. That assumption is doing real work and is rarely stated.

Distinguishing marketed research compounds from true chemical synthesis: some online suppliers sell compounds that are genuinely novel and difficult to obtain elsewhere. Others repackage standard compounds. Verifying what you are buying requires careful documentation review.

Two people can read the same figure differently here and both be reasonable.
