Posting this under the heading it deserves: Payment method and the leverage it gives you, ranked Everything below is what sits behind that.

A payments question, with the mechanics separated from the money.

What I would like to understand is what each payment route actually leaves you holding afterwards: what is recorded, who holds the record, and what can be produced later if a consignment has to be discussed. That is a different question from which route is cheapest.

I have listed what I keep at the moment below. I would like to know what is missing from it rather than whether it is enough.

Fraud and scams: if a supplier demands payment upfront with no recourse if delivery fails, you are taking a risk. Reputation and history of other buyers matter.

The strongest argument against my own position on payment method, stated as well as I can state it, since nobody else has yet.

JFitzgibbon, post #22: If someone has run payment method properly I would rather read that than my own reconstruction of it. Posting mine only because the thread has gone quiet. Go to post

Reading back through the payment method threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

This follows post #31 rather than contradicting it.

Offering a way to settle payment method rather than another opinion about it. Two measurements, taken the same way, a fortnight apart. If the difference is within the noise, the question was not answerable at this precision.

to.varga, post #23: Picking up post #22: that is the part I would want checked first. Recording the time from payment to dispatch is worth doing, because it is the part of the process most within the supplier's control. Go to post

This is the answer, and the reason it is the answer is the more useful part.

Post #44 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Recording the time from payment to dispatch is worth doing, because it is the part of the process most within the supplier's control.

If this contradicts something upthread, the upthread version may well be the better one.

mi.almeida, post #46: The site does not carry prices, payment details or transaction routes, and questions asking for them will be answered with that rather than with a link. The literature is thinner on this than the confidence in the thread implies. Go to post

Something worth flagging about payment method: the strongest-sounding claims in this thread are the ones with no source attached, which is the usual pattern and not a coincidence.

No payment facilitation: this site does not handle payments and does not connect buyers and sellers for the purpose of payment. We discuss logistics and documentation of the process but not the commerce itself.

I would put this at better than even and not much better.

Moved from Logistics by hana.sato. Category placement is not obvious from outside and getting it wrong is expected. This topic will get better answers here. The move is recorded in the public log citing R7.
