c.inglethorpe, post #10: I disagree with the framing of Publishing an inconvenient result above, and I think it is a substantive disagreement rather than a terminological one. Setting out why, so it can be checked. The reasoning depends on an assumption that is doing a lot of work and is never stated. If the assumption holds, the conclusion follows. I do not… Go to post

Where I part company with post #8, and it is a narrow parting.

Where two services agree with each other and with the declared figure, that is a genuinely strong result and it applies to that lot.

That is what the documentation says. What happens in practice is usually close.

Post #12 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Reading this Publishing an inconvenient result thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.

g.rasmussen, post #4: I changed my mind about Publishing an inconvenient result after someone here asked me for the source and I could not produce one. That is worth saying out loud because it is the ordinary way it happens. Go to post

This follows post #22 rather than contradicting it.

Combining a chromatographic result with a documentation review gives a more complete picture than two chromatographic results, because the failure modes are different.

The part I am sure of is shorter than the part I have written.

j.teixeira, post #20: What I would check first on Publishing an inconvenient result is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph. Go to post

Adding a null result on Publishing an inconvenient result. I looked, carefully, and found nothing, and null results deserve posting precisely because they never are.

On Publishing an inconvenient result, the part that usually goes wrong is that the question is asked as though it has one answer. It has a range, and the width of the range is the interesting bit.

If you can post the two or three numbers you are working from, several people here will check the arithmetic rather than argue about the conclusion.

y.asante, post #36: Publishing an inconvenient result has been discussed here with more heat than it deserves, mostly because two definitions have been in play the whole time. Go to post

Picking up post #46: that is the part I would want checked first.

My understanding of Publishing an inconvenient result is a few years old and may have been superseded. If it has been, I would genuinely like to know rather than keep repeating it.

journalclub_wren, post #35: Narrowing post #32, because the general version has more than one answer. Verification records are dated because they expire in usefulness. A result from two years ago describes a lot from two years ago. Adding a source would improve this post and I do not have one to hand. Go to post

Practical answer on Publishing an inconvenient result, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not.

Post #58 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Asking the supplier before publishing a discrepancy is the convention here. Most discrepancies are explained by handling or method and asking costs a day.

The short answer was in the first line; everything after is the working.

That matches what I have seen, for whatever a single anecdote is worth.
