Asking directly, because I could not find a straight answer: Why chargeback is not the safety net people assume

Asking about the record rather than the transfer.

Every order leaves a trail: an order reference, a dated confirmation, an amount, a currency, and whatever the seller sends back. Six months later the trail is the only thing you have.

What belongs in that record, in what order, and what do people wish they had written down at the time?

Discounts tied to a larger order change the risk profile as well as the price, because more of your material now comes from one lot.

Someone should write this up properly, and it should probably not be me.

A methods point on chargeback rather than a substantive one: if the comparison is not like for like, the difference you are measuring is the difference in method.

Practical answer on chargeback, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not.

Agreed on chargeback, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.
