Journal club: FLOW and the renal composite, component by component Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

A question about what the numbers mean rather than what they are.

FLOW (N Engl J Med, 2024) reports its primary result in relative terms, and the absolute figures are in a table two pages later. The two produce very different impressions of the same finding.

I would like to work through which one belongs in a summary, and why the answer is not simply "both".

The figures usually contain the finding and the text usually contains the interpretation. Separating them for the first twenty minutes is a discipline worth keeping.

FLOW (N Engl J Med 2024): Semaglutide renal outcomes in type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Stopped early for efficacy. Component-by-component analysis is essential because the components differ in how patient-important they are.

That is my reading. Someone else read the same page differently and was reasonable.
