Lipid changes during rapid weight loss: the expected trajectory

Solved
Solved by a.nascimento in post #3
If someone has run lipid changes during rapid weight properly I would rather read that than my own reconstruction of it. Posting mine only because the thread has gone quiet.

Posting this under the heading it deserves: Lipid changes during rapid weight loss: the expected trajectory Everything below is what sits behind that.

Lipid changes during rapid weight: what I expected, what I found, and the gap between them.

I am posting the gap rather than a theory about it. My theories about gaps like this one have not held up well.

Answering the question the opening post raises rather than the one it answers.

Liver enzyme changes during rapid weight loss are commonly reported and have several possible explanations, which is exactly why they need clinical interpretation rather than forum interpretation.

Agreed on lipid changes during rapid weight, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.

Renal function markers: eGFR is estimated, not measured. It depends on creatinine, age, and weight. A small change in creatinine might not mean a real change in kidney function.

Not the answer, but possibly the question that gets there.

That reframing is the whole thing. The facts I already had.

Post #4 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Glycaemic markers integrate over different periods. A point glucose and a longer-term marker disagreeing is not a contradiction; it is two different questions.

I have no financial interest in anything named in this thread and I want to say so before I comment on lipid changes during rapid weight, because it is the sort of subject where it matters.

What I would want before treating lipid changes during rapid weight as settled: the method, the sample, and whether anyone tried to find the opposite result. Two of the three are usually missing.

Repeat before acting is standard practice for an isolated abnormal result on most analytes, and it is standard for a reason.

It is worth stating the boring hypothesis before the interesting one.

I read post #9 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Something worth flagging about lipid changes during rapid weight: the strongest-sounding claims in this thread are the ones with no source attached, which is the usual pattern and not a coincidence.

A trend needs at least three points to be a trend. Two points are a line and a line through noise is still a line.

If anyone can point at the primary source I would be grateful.

Quietly grateful for the plain phrasing. Not every thread gets that.

Taking post #12 at face value and following it one step further.

Lipid changes during substantial weight loss are expected and their trajectory is not always monotonic. A single mid-course panel can be misleading.

Narrowing post #14, because the general version has more than one answer.

Lipid changes during rapid weight has a well-known answer and a correct answer, and the interesting work is establishing that they are the same. Nobody has done that here yet.
