Long-time reader, first-time poster

FP
f.piresTL230 Oct 2025#1

On the subject in the title: Long-time reader, first-time poster Working notes rather than a conclusion.

Trying to work out what would count as evidence on long-time reader, before collecting any. This is the part I usually skip and it is the part that makes the rest useful.

If two explanations predict the same observation, observing it does not help. So: what observation would separate them?

Before the thread moves on from long-time reader — what is the sample size behind the claim? I am not being difficult; I have seen the same figure quoted from an n of four and from an n of four hundred.

No spam: introductions are not a place to advertise commercial products or services. That is a rules violation.

Reading it again, the caveat matters more than the finding.

Thank you — that answers what I came here to find out.

There is: the practice category, and the calculators, both written for exactly that. Nothing there assumes chemistry, and the maintained documents show their working so you can check them by hand.

Happy to expand any of that if it is the useful part.

Long-time reader is one of those subjects where the general answer and the answer for a specific case diverge, and the thread will go in circles until someone says which one is being asked for.

For anyone finding this later: the short answer on long-time reader is that it depends on one thing, and the rest of the thread is people identifying which thing.

New, no scientific background at all, and slightly intimidated by the first three topics I opened. Is there a sensible on-ramp for someone who is here for practical reasons rather than technical ones?

This is the sort of exchange that makes the archive worth searching.

On long-time reader: the maintained page in the documentation commons covers the general case with citations and a review date, which is more reliable than any reply here including this one.

Summarising the long-time reader thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

Welcome. Nobody will mind you asking something basic. The people most likely to answer are the ones who remember not knowing it.

Genuinely open to being wrong about this one.

I would call the community position on long-time reader likely rather than established, and I would be comfortable defending that hedge.

Long-time reader is a question about a distribution, not about a value, and treating it as a value is what produces the confident wrong answers.

Welcome from staff. Nothing is required of you here — no posting quota, no introduction, no declaration of background. The only thing we ask is that a claim about a supplier arrives with the evidence attached.

Filing this under things that are true until someone shows me otherwise.

Adding a reference point for long-time reader. Mine is a single case, collected without controls, and I am posting the method alongside it so it can be discounted appropriately.

Genuine question rather than a rhetorical one: has anyone here actually observed long-time reader, as opposed to read about it? The thread is long and I cannot tell.

Acknowledging rather than arguing. The reasoning holds as far as I can follow it.

What to include: your name or handle, how you found the community, what brings you here, maybe something about yourself that seems relevant (clinician, researcher, person using these compounds, curious). Anything you are comfortable sharing.

The version of long-time reader that circulates here is a simplification of a simplification. It is not wrong, but it has lost the conditions under which it holds, and those conditions are where the interesting cases live.
