Naming conventions for research peptides and the confusion they cause — one year on

Naming conventions for research peptides and the confusion they cause — one year on — setting out what I have, and where I think it stops being reliable.

Asking about Naming conventions for research peptides directly, because I have read four threads on it and each answered a slightly different question.

The version I want answered is the narrow one: given the method stated below, is the result within what anyone else has seen? I am not asking what it means yet.

Method, numbers and the two assumptions I am aware of making are below. If the assumptions are wrong that is more useful to me than agreement.

Naming conventions for research peptides cause confusion because suppliers do not follow a standard. The same compound gets different names from different suppliers. If you are researching something, confirming the sequence or mass is more reliable than confirming the name.

I keep a log of this specifically because memory is unreliable about it.

Anything in this subcategory with a published trial behind it should be discussed separately from anything without one. Mixing them produces a discussion where the confident claims come from the compounds with the least evidence.

Worth saying I have only my own numbers here, and n is small.

Taking post #3 at face value and following it one step further.

Distinguishing marketed research compounds from true chemical synthesis: some online suppliers sell compounds that are genuinely novel and difficult to obtain elsewhere. Others repackage standard compounds. Verifying what you are buying requires careful documentation review.

I would want the raw data before agreeing with my own summary of it.

Fragment compounds — where the material is part of a larger natural protein — should be identified by sequence rather than by name, because the naming in this space is inconsistent between suppliers.

One more caveat and then I will stop qualifying: the sample selected itself.

Colour in a lyophilised cake is worth noting for the less common compounds specifically, because some of them are genuinely not white and a member expecting white will report a problem that is not one.

Take it as a starting point and not as a specification.
