Payment mechanics and the recovery options that do not exist posts 31–60

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Post #30 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Where the payment mechanics discussion usually stalls is that nobody wants to say "I do not know" and everyone is willing to say "it varies". Those are the same sentence with different clothes on.

Thank you for taking the time. That was more work than a reply usually is.

Partial shipment with the balance to follow should be agreed in advance rather than discovered on arrival. Where it is agreed, it is unremarkable.

Posted with less confidence than the sentence structure implies.

Taking post #32 at face value and following it one step further.

Payment mechanics came up in a thread eighteen months ago and was answered well. I cannot find it, which is itself the problem, so here is the reconstruction.

Recording the time from payment to dispatch is worth doing, because it is the part of the process most within the supplier's control.

It cost nothing to check and would have cost something not to.

The honest answer on payment mechanics is that it depends, and the useful part is the list of what it depends on. Four items, in rough order of how much they matter.

Most people get the first two right and then argue about the fourth.

Okafor, post #8: A first order deliberately smaller than you need is the standard risk-limiting approach here and it costs a little more per unit for a reason. Not a conclusion. A place to stand while looking for one. Go to post

I read the earlier replies on payment mechanics twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.

The site does not carry prices, payment details or transaction routes, and questions asking for them will be answered with that rather than with a link.

A guess, clearly labelled as one.

Clear enough that I do not think I have a follow-up, which is unusual.

What I would tell a new member reading about payment mechanics for the first time: the confident posts are not the reliable ones, and the reliable ones are longer.

The strongest argument against my own position on payment mechanics, stated as well as I can state it, since nobody else has yet.

i.norgaard, post #1: Payment mechanics and the recovery options that do not exist Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did. What I would like to understand is what each payment route actually leaves you holding afterwards: what is recorded, who holds… Go to post

Agreed, and I will stop repeating the version of this I had been repeating.

Escrow services: some third-party services hold payment until the buyer confirms receipt. They add cost but reduce risk if the supplier is unknown.

Post #44 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

The practical questions in this subcategory are about recourse, records and timing, and none of them are chemistry. That is worth stating because the subcategory attracts chemistry answers.

Someone should write this up properly, and it should probably not be me.

Taking post #47 at face value and following it one step further.

An honest declaration on payment mechanics: I have a prior here and it is strong enough that you should weight what I say downward. Stating it rather than hiding it.

Everything in post #47 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Chargeback reality: if you pay by credit card and the supplier does not deliver, you can attempt a chargeback. Suppliers know this and many require non-chargeable payment (transfer, crypto) as protection against it.

That matches what I was told, which is not the same as knowing it.

Narrowing post #47, because the general version has more than one answer.

The most useful thing anyone has posted about payment mechanics in this category was a table of what had been measured and by whom. That is what I would want again.

b.wikstrom, post #9: Fraud and scams: if a supplier demands payment upfront with no recourse if delivery fails, you are taking a risk. Reputation and history of other buyers matter. One of those cases where knowing the mechanism does not help the decision. Go to post

Reading back through the payment mechanics threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

m.silva, post #20: Two claims get bundled together under payment mechanics and they need separating. The descriptive one — this is what was observed — is usually well supported. The causal one — this is why — usually is not. Almost every disagreement in threads like this one dissolves once you say which of the two you are making. Go to post

Post #50 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Payment mechanics is well covered in the tag pages, and the older discussions are better than the recent ones because they were argued out properly. Worth twenty minutes before adding to this one.

I read post #52 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Cryptocurrency for payment: offers less fraud protection than credit cards and is final like bank transfer. Advantage: no geographic restrictions and no intermediary can reverse it. Disadvantage: if you send to a wrong address, it is lost.

I would rather be precise about what I do not know than vague about what I do.

This follows post #54 rather than contradicting it.

No payment facilitation: this site does not handle payments and does not connect buyers and sellers for the purpose of payment. We discuss logistics and documentation of the process but not the commerce itself.

A modest claim, modestly supported.

d.nilsen, post #3: Bank transfer and finality: once a bank transfer is sent, it is final. The money is gone. There is no recourse with the bank if the supplier disappears. That is why supplier reputation matters if using transfers. I would rather post the uncertainty than round it away. Go to post

Answering the payment mechanics question as asked, then the question I think is meant. As asked: yes, with the qualification below. As meant: it depends on how the first measurement was taken.

Nobody has said the unglamorous part of payment mechanics yet, so: most of the variation is explained by things that are boring to write about and easy to check.

Picking up post #57: that is the part I would want checked first.

The strength of my opinion here exceeds the strength of my evidence.

On post #56 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Payment mechanics: most suppliers accept bank transfer, crypto, and some accept credit cards. Each has different risk and different fees. Understand before you commit to a payment method.

The number is defensible. The precision I gave it is not.
