Practical answer on pen dose counters, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not.
Pen mechanics: most pens are dial-and-inject devices where you dial the dose on the pen and push the button to inject. Understanding your specific pen's mechanism prevents dose errors.
The short version is the first sentence; the rest is why.
Where I part company with post #66, and it is a narrow parting.
Dose counters: pens show the remaining number of doses. When the counter reaches zero, the pen is empty and cannot deliver more. Noting the counter before injection prevents running out unexpectedly.
Off-label dosing with a pen: if you want to deliver a dose different from the pen's pre-set steps (e.g., halfway between two step doses), that is off-label use. Some pens allow it; others do not. Confirm before attempting.
Old habit: I write down the expected answer before I calculate it.
The instruction leaflet for a licensed pen is a genuinely good technical document and is almost never read past the first page. It answers most of what gets asked here.

Travel with a pen raises a cold-chain question and a documentation question. The second is the one people forget until an airport.
I would put a moderate confidence on that and no more.
Injection duration: most pens deliver the dose over several seconds. Holding the button down for the full duration ensures complete delivery. Releasing early can result in underdosing.
Worth one more sentence than it usually gets.
Priming: most pens require priming before the first use (injecting a small amount to fill the needle and line). Not priming can result in no dose being delivered on the first injection.
On post #74 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Where I would push back on the pen dose counters consensus is the confidence, not the direction. The direction looks right. The confidence is borrowed.
Storage instructions for a pen typically differ before and after first use, and the in-use period is the one people miss. It is on the carton.
Taking post #78 at face value and following it one step further.
A pen taken straight from the refrigerator is uncomfortable to inject for the same reason a cold syringe is. Room temperature for a short while first is the standard advice.
This is the sort of thing that ought to be settled and apparently is not.
Post #80 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.
The residual left in a cartridge at the end is deliberate overfill and is not a dose you are entitled to extract. Attempting to recover it is where accuracy goes.

A pen that has been dropped may not be visibly damaged and may not deliver accurately afterwards. Manufacturers say to replace rather than to test, and there is no test a user can do.
Autoinjectors that fire on skin contact remove the technique variable almost entirely, which is their advantage. They also remove the ability to inject slowly, which is occasionally a disadvantage.
Worth separating two things that post #84 runs together.
Reusability: some pens are single-use (throw away after one injection). Others can be reused until empty. Confirm which type you have. Reusing a single-use pen is ineffective because the mechanism does not reset.
I would hold that lightly until someone with a larger sample weighs in.
Post #86 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.
A pen that will not dial to the intended dose is usually telling you the cartridge does not contain enough for it. That is a designed behaviour rather than a fault.
A guess, clearly labelled as one.
Storage after first use: most pens can be stored at room temperature after first use, even if unrefrigerated, for a limited time (often 28 days). Check your specific pen's labelling.
