Refrigerated versus room temperature: the trade-off stated plainly — what changed since

Posting this under the heading it deserves: Refrigerated versus room temperature: the trade-off stated plainly — what changed since Everything below is what sits behind that.

What changes if the standard account of Refrigerated versus room temperature is wrong? I ask because I have been treating it as settled and I noticed this week that I could not say why.

Working through the consequences rather than the evidence, since others here are better placed on the evidence.

The honest summary: keep it dry until you need it, keep it cold once it is not, keep it dark, do not cycle the temperature, and treat any period at room temperature as spent whether or not anything visible happened.

If the premise is wrong, everything after it is decoration.

Following this. I have the same question and no better information than the first post.
