Waist circumference technique and its repeatability

RF

Waist circumference technique and its repeatability — setting out what I have, and where I think it stops being reliable.

I have spent a fortnight trying to pin waist circumference technique down and I want to set out where I have got to, because I suspect the honest answer is duller than the thread this will produce.

What I have: a consistent observation across a small number of cases, collected the same way each time. What I do not have: any controlled comparison, or any reason to think my cases are representative.

The specific question is whether the pattern survives once the obvious confounder is removed. I cannot remove it with what I have.

Nothing here is medical advice and a progress report is a description of what happened to one person under uncontrolled conditions.

A note on how waist circumference technique gets discussed rather than on waist circumference technique itself: the confident posts get the replies and the careful ones get ignored, and the careful ones have been right more often.

Waist circumference technique came up in a thread eighteen months ago and was answered well. I cannot find it, which is itself the problem, so here is the reconstruction.

Rate of change matters more than the absolute number for most of the questions people ask about their own series.

The honest answer on waist circumference technique is that it depends, and the useful part is the list of what it depends on. Four items, in rough order of how much they matter.

Most people get the first two right and then argue about the fourth.

Checked the waist circumference technique claim against the primary source this morning. It survives, with a narrower scope than the version quoted here. Posting the narrower scope.

That is the distinction I keep failing to hold on to. Written down now.

Non-scale victories: muscle gain or maintenance, clothing fit, energy level, and capability (like climbing stairs without breathlessness) are measurements that scale-based weight misses.

Worth checking against a second source before it gets quoted onward.

Post #7 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

I have three months of notes on waist circumference technique and the honest summary is that the trend is real and the week-to-week numbers are noise. I nearly drew the opposite conclusion from the first fortnight.

Picking up post #9: that is the part I would want checked first.

Trying to state the waist circumference technique position in a way that someone who disagrees would recognise as fair, because I do not think the version in this thread passes that test.

A single scale used throughout beats a more accurate scale introduced halfway through. Consistency beats accuracy for a trend.

I keep a log of this specifically because memory is unreliable about it.

An honest declaration on waist circumference technique: I have a prior here and it is strong enough that you should weight what I say downward. Stating it rather than hiding it.

That reframing is the whole thing. The facts I already had.

Adding the measurement that post #12 says would settle it.

The strongest argument against my own position on waist circumference technique, stated as well as I can state it, since nobody else has yet.

Post #15 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Menstrual cycle: for people who menstruate, weight can shift by several pounds across the cycle due to fluid retention and other factors. Noting cycle phase when weighing reduces apparent noise.

The best progress reports here read as records rather than as arguments, and that difference is visible within a sentence.

None of the above is medical advice and I am not qualified to give any.

Distinguishing three things in the waist circumference technique discussion that keep getting used interchangeably: the observation, the proposed mechanism, and the recommendation that gets attached to both.

I think the waist circumference technique question is answerable and has not been answered, which is a more optimistic position than most of this thread.

Answering the question post #18 raises rather than the one it answers.

Maintenance series are the ones this subcategory needs most and receives least. The interesting questions all change once loss stops.

I am describing what is, rather than arguing for what should be.

Waist circumference technique is worth one more sentence than it usually gets, and the sentence is the one about how the number was arrived at.

Taking post #19 at face value and following it one step further.

Having read the whole waist circumference technique thread before replying: the question in the first post has not actually been answered yet, and three of us have answered a nearby one instead.

If a pattern survives a rolling-mean treatment it is worth explaining. Most do not, and that is the useful finding.

I looked this up rather than remembered it, which is the right order.

I would keep waist circumference technique and the decision it usually gets used for separate in this thread. They are related and they are not the same question, and merging them is why the last one went badly.

I read post #23 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Seasonal patterns: some people report weight loss is slower in winter than summer. Body composition and activity changes might contribute. Noting the season is useful context.

Take the reasoning and check the arithmetic; I do not always get it right.

Circumference measurements at marked sites are cheap, reproducible within a person, and more informative than they get credit for.

That holds under the stated conditions and I have stated them.

Self-reported intake is optimistic in a consistent direction, and saying so in your own report is more credible than not.

If anyone has run this properly I would rather read that than my own guess.

Careful with the language on waist circumference technique. "Not detected" and "not present" are different findings and the first is a statement about the method.
