Payment method and the leverage it gives you, ranked — setting out what I have, and where I think it stops being reliable.

A payments question, with the mechanics separated from the money.

What I would like to understand is what each payment route actually leaves you holding afterwards: what is recorded, who holds the record, and what can be produced later if a consignment has to be discussed. That is a different question from which route is cheapest.

I have listed what I keep at the moment below. I would like to know what is missing from it rather than whether it is enough.

Source for the Payment method figure, since it was asked for. It is in the discussion rather than the abstract, which is why the version circulating is stronger than the paper is.

Reading the surrounding paragraph is worth the two minutes. The authors are more careful than their summarisers.

Picking up post #2: that is the part I would want checked first.

Currency conversion: payment in your local currency often involves a conversion fee. Paying in the supplier's native currency sometimes saves money, sometimes costs more. Compare before committing.

Cryptocurrency for payment: offers less fraud protection than credit cards and is final like bank transfer. Advantage: no geographic restrictions and no intermediary can reverse it. Disadvantage: if you send to a wrong address, it is lost.

Genuinely open to being wrong about this one.

Payment method is one of those subjects where the general answer and the answer for a specific case diverge, and the thread will go in circles until someone says which one is being asked for.

This follows post #7 rather than contradicting it.

Practical note on Payment method: write down what you expect before you look. The number of times I have found what I went looking for is higher than chance would allow.

I read post #7 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Recurring billing: if a supplier sets up recurring billing by default, understanding the terms for cancellation is important before the first charge.

Escrow services: some third-party services hold payment until the buyer confirms receipt. They add cost but reduce risk if the supplier is unknown.

One more caveat and then I will stop qualifying: the sample selected itself.

Same experience here, different supplier, so it is at least not unique to one of them.

Whatever the answer on Payment method turns out to be, the method for getting there is the same: state the assumption, do the arithmetic in public, invite the correction.

Coming back to post #11, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

The site does not carry prices, payment details or transaction routes, and questions asking for them will be answered with that rather than with a link.

Reading this Payment method thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.

On Payment method, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one.

Post #16 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Fraud and scams: if a supplier demands payment upfront with no recourse if delivery fails, you are taking a risk. Reputation and history of other buyers matter.

I read post #14 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Confirming the total before paying rather than after is obvious and is skipped constantly, particularly where shipping is added late.

The short answer was in the first line; everything after is the working.

Post #18 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Payment mechanics: most suppliers accept bank transfer, crypto, and some accept credit cards. Each has different risk and different fees. Understand before you commit to a payment method.

Anyone with a larger sample, please post it.

Post #20 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

I changed my mind about Payment method after someone here asked me for the source and I could not produce one. That is worth saying out loud because it is the ordinary way it happens.

On Payment method, the part that usually goes wrong is that the question is asked as though it has one answer. It has a range, and the width of the range is the interesting bit.

If you can post the two or three numbers you are working from, several people here will check the arithmetic rather than argue about the conclusion.

Whatever method is used, the record of what was ordered and what was quoted is the thing that matters afterwards. Screenshots of a cart are not a record.

Reading it back, the second half matters more than the first.

On post #23 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Recording the time from payment to dispatch is worth doing, because it is the part of the process most within the supplier's control.

Speaking only to Payment method as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect.

The useful distinction on Payment method is between what was measured and what was inferred from it. Both end up in the same sentence and only one of them has error bars.
