Coming back to: Training through a dose escalation week posts 61–75

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

I read post #59 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Where I would push back on the Training through a dose escalation consensus is the confidence, not the direction. The direction looks right. The confidence is borrowed.

b.jansen, post #23: Frequency: three sessions per week of full-body training is easier to maintain than higher frequencies on an energy deficit. Consistency beats intensity when recovery capacity is limited. It is the sort of thing that seems obvious in retrospect and was not at the time. Go to post

Adding a data point of agreement rather than a data point.

p.iyer_pharmd, post #37: The question underneath Training through a dose escalation is usually "how would I tell?" rather than "what is true?", and that one has a method attached to it. Write down what you would expect to see under each hypothesis before you collect anything. If they predict the same observation, collecting it will not help. Go to post

Anybody returning after a break should expect to start lower than they left, and expecting otherwise is where injuries come from.

Worth saying I have only my own numbers here, and n is small.

Post #64 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Maintenance is the goal: preserving lean mass and strength during weight loss is the goal of resistance training in this context, not building new muscle. That goal is usually achievable with consistent, moderate training.

I keep a log of this specifically because memory is unreliable about it.

Coming back to post #62, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Frequency: three sessions per week of full-body training is easier to maintain than higher frequencies on an energy deficit. Consistency beats intensity when recovery capacity is limited.

hana.sato, post #31: Everything in post #29 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have. Protein and training are complements rather than alternatives, and the published work on lean-tissue preservation treats them that way. Go to post

The reports here that state the programme, the load and the timeframe are useful. The ones that state an outcome are not.

Stating my assumptions rather than smuggling them in.

Careful with the language on Training through a dose escalation. "Not detected" and "not present" are different findings and the first is a statement about the method.

an.kirchner, post #9: Where somebody is losing strength rapidly, the first questions are intake, sleep and total training volume, in that order. Noting that I have skin in this question and have tried to discount for it. Go to post

An update on my earlier Training through a dose escalation post: the pattern held for another six weeks and then stopped, which I did not predict and cannot explain.

Training fasted or fed is a comfort question at these intakes rather than a performance question for most people.

Noted, and thank you for writing it out rather than summarising it.

s.antonsen, post #40: Adding the measurement that post #37 says would settle it. Where somebody is losing strength rapidly, the first questions are intake, sleep and total training volume, in that order. Adding it because I spent an afternoon working it out and nobody should have to twice. Go to post

Volume: the number of sets per muscle group per week that supports muscle maintenance is roughly 12 to 18 hard sets. That varies by individual but gives a target range.

A single observation, in a thread that deserves better than single observations.

Where I part company with post #69, and it is a narrow parting.

Frequency matters less than consistency and progression. Two sessions a week done every week beats four sessions done occasionally.

Post #73 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Reframing Training through a dose escalation slightly, because I think the disagreement is about the question rather than the answer. If the question is "does it happen", yes. If it is "how often", nobody here knows.
