Follow-up: A supplier that answers analytical questions with restated claims posts 61–83

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

h.delgado, post #24: This follows post #23 rather than contradicting it. Anonymity: a supplier that will not disclose legal name, address, or responsible person is not operating in a way that allows accountability. Posting it because the silence on this was starting to look like agreement. Go to post

Evasion when asked: if a supplier does not clarify when asked specifically for method details, counter-ion form, or batch origin, that itself is a red flag worth documenting.

I would call that likely rather than established.

Where I have landed on supplier, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it.

Picking up post #63: that is the part I would want checked first.

The confident answers on supplier and the well-sourced answers are not the same answers, which is the most useful thing I have learned reading this category.

No notes. Posting so the count is not one.

Post #63 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

A stock listing that never changes and a lead time that never varies are both worth noticing. Real operations have variation in them.

Adding it because I spent an afternoon working it out and nobody should have to twice.

Nothing here should be read as an accusation against a named company, and the guidelines exist so that reports remain reports.

I would not lead a decision with this, but I would not ignore it either.

Being wrong in public about a supplier is costly to that supplier and to the person who was wrong. That is why the evidence standard is what it is.

Reading back through the supplier threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

n.rowntree, post #13: On supplier, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one. Go to post

Post #67 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

What I would want before treating supplier as settled: the method, the sample, and whether anyone tried to find the opposite result. Two of the three are usually missing.

The strongest single signal available cheaply is what happens when you ask a technical question. A quantitative answer inside a working day is difficult to fake at scale.

I have changed my mind on this once already, so take it as current rather than settled.

Post #68 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

A supplier changing batch nomenclature is not a warning sign, and it does make historical comparison harder until a mapping exists.

Anonymity: a supplier that will not disclose legal name, address, or responsible person is not operating in a way that allows accountability.

It is the sort of thing that seems obvious in retrospect and was not at the time.

CSagredo, post #31: Prices well below the rest of the market are a fact rather than a finding. They are worth noting and they do not establish anything on their own. I am aware this is the third time this month I have made this point. Go to post

Documentation quality as a signal: a supplier that reports method identifiers, distinguishes specification from result, and states the counter-ion form is telling you something about systems behind the document. A certificate that is a number and a signature tells you less.

That has been true for the cases I have seen and I have not seen many.

r.petrov, post #48: Claims of pharmaceutical-grade status for research-use-only material are a labelling problem and are common enough to be worth expecting rather than reacting to. Go to post

On supplier I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated.

Good question, well framed, and I would like to see it answered properly.

The arithmetic in post #74 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

Checked the supplier claim against the primary source this morning. It survives, with a narrower scope than the version quoted here. Posting the narrower scope.

Exaggerated claims without documentation: every compound has limits. No peptide is "100% pure" because purity is measured to finite precision. A supplier claiming implausible perfection without backing evidence is overreaching.

Confirming post #78 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

Inconsistency across documents: a certificate stating one purity, a website claiming another, and a supplier's verbal representation claiming a third, all on the same product, is a red flag for either incompetence or deception.

Second-hand on supplier, so weight it accordingly — someone whose method I trust told me this and I have not verified it myself.

Keep the two claims separate. "The result on this lot did not match the certificate" is a report that can be checked. "This supplier is dishonest" is an allegation about intent and nothing in a chromatogram supports it.

g.pemberton_uk, post #29: Where I part company with post #27, and it is a narrow parting. Rapid supplier turnover: a supplier that changes corporate structure, domain name, or contact repeatedly in short time windows raises suspicion about stability and legitimacy. Go to post

Summarising the supplier thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

Answering the question post #81 raises rather than the one it answers.

Safety documentation absent: a supplier that cannot provide information about sterility testing, endotoxin testing, or safety documentation when asked is raising flags.
