The most useful convention this subcategory has: state the status, state the version, state the date you checked. Three short clauses and the citation stays honest.

The useful distinction on community labels is between what was measured and what was inferred from it. Both end up in the same sentence and only one of them has error bars.

Author track record is a weak signal and it is a signal. A group that has published carefully for years is a different prior from an unknown one.

If that reads as pedantic, it is, and it has saved me twice.

e.tamm, post #6: I had written a reply contradicting post #4 and deleted it. Here is what survived. On community labels the community has more anecdote than the confidence in this thread implies, and I include my own contribution in that. Go to post

Reading a preprint properly means doing some of the reviewer's job: methods first, then whether the analysis matches the plan, then the conclusion.

Small point, but it is the one that usually catches people.

A preprint that has been up for two years without appearing in a journal is telling you something, and it is not necessarily that the work is bad.

That is what I would do. It may not be what is correct.
