Insomnia at a dose step: reported experiences — the long version

Solved Pinned

Post #5 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition. The most useful reply I ever got about Insomnia was a request to state my units. It sounds like pedantry and it has saved me twice.

Insomnia at a dose step: reported experiences — the long version Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

A sleep question with what I actually recorded rather than how I feel about it.

Bedtime and rise time to the nearest quarter hour, 74 consecutive nights, plus a single 0-4 score for how the following morning went. The device numbers I have kept separately, because I do not trust them and I did not want them contaminating the diary.

The pattern I am asking about is in the middle of the series and I cannot decide whether it is real or an artefact of a change in when I recorded.

Confirming the opening post from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

Energy availability affects sleep in both directions, and a large deficit can produce either fragmentation or unusual sleepiness.

Since Insomnia keeps coming up, it should probably be a maintained page rather than a recurring thread. I am happy to draft it if someone with more direct experience will review it.

What I can speak to on Insomnia is narrow, so I will keep it narrow rather than generalising from it. Beyond that boundary I do not know.

Any objective measurement, even an imprecise one, beats a recollection when the question is whether something changed.

Stating my assumptions rather than smuggling them in.

Reporting rather than recommending, on Insomnia. What happened is above. Whether it should have is a different question and not one I am qualified to answer.

A referral for a proper sleep study answers in one night what months of forum discussion cannot.

The right answer here may simply be that it has not been measured.

I have no financial interest in anything named in this thread and I want to say so before I comment on Insomnia, because it is the sort of subject where it matters.

Waking at night with nausea is described commonly here and is a timing question as much as a dose question.

One more caveat and then I will stop qualifying: the sample selected itself.

Fair, and the limits you put on it are the part I will remember.

An update on my earlier Insomnia post: the pattern held for another six weeks and then stopped, which I did not predict and cannot explain.

Picking up post #10: that is the part I would want checked first.

Reflux at night follows directly from delayed gastric emptying and is a mechanical explanation for a complaint often attributed elsewhere.

Vivid dreams are reported here and are not well characterised in the published literature for this class.

What I would tell a new member reading about Insomnia for the first time: the confident posts are not the reliable ones, and the reliable ones are longer.

I read post #12 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Sleep quality changes reported here have several plausible contributors, and separating drug effects from weight change, from schedule change, and from anxiety is genuinely difficult.

Noting that the question and the thing people usually mean by it are different.

Adding a null result on Insomnia. I looked, carefully, and found nothing, and null results deserve posting precisely because they never are.

I think the Insomnia question is answerable and has not been answered, which is a more optimistic position than most of this thread.

Post #18 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Stimulants and sleep: if supplementing with caffeine or other stimulants for energy during weight loss, timing and dose matter for sleep. Evening stimulant use interferes with sleep.

The practical version of Insomnia is three sentences long. The rigorous version is three pages and reaches the same conclusion with the conditions attached.

The arithmetic in post #21 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

On Insomnia the community has more anecdote than the confidence in this thread implies, and I include my own contribution in that.

Post #21 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Where a partner reports a change the person has not noticed, that observation is usually the more reliable one.

Someone should write this up properly, and it should probably not be me.

Right, and stated more narrowly than I would have dared to state it.

Where I would push back on the Insomnia consensus is the confidence, not the direction. The direction looks right. The confidence is borrowed.

Post #25 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

An honest declaration on Insomnia: I have a prior here and it is strong enough that you should weight what I say downward. Stating it rather than hiding it.

Taking post #25 at face value and following it one step further.

Having read the whole Insomnia thread before replying: the question in the first post has not actually been answered yet, and three of us have answered a nearby one instead.

On post #25 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Reporting improvement is as useful as reporting a problem, and this subcategory hears far more of the second.

That matches what I was told, which is not the same as knowing it.

Insomnia is worth one more sentence than it usually gets, and the sentence is the one about how the number was arrived at.
