Irish differences from the UK position posts 31–60

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1 · go to the accepted answer.

Post #27 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Correcting an out-of-date claim in this subcategory with a source and a date is more valuable than a new topic on the same question.

The evidence for this is thinner than the way I have phrased it suggests.

e.iyer, post #24: Practical note on irish differences: write down what you expect before you look. The number of times I have found what I went looking for is higher than chance would allow. Go to post

Building on post #31 rather than restating it.

The thing about irish differences that took me longest to accept is that a plausible mechanism is not evidence of an effect. It is a reason to look, not a result.

n.torrence, post #14: Adding the measurement that post #12 says would settle it. What I want from this irish differences thread is the list of things that would need to be true for the claim to hold. If we can write that list, we can check it. Go to post

Irish differences is a good example of a question where the honest answer is boring and the interesting answers are unsupported. I would go with boring.

I came in to disagree and I am leaving without a disagreement.

Where I part company with post #31, and it is a narrow parting.

Where the compound is supplied with a device, the device and the compound have separate availability positions and the device is more often the constraint.

Careful with the language on irish differences. "Not detected" and "not present" are different findings and the first is a statement about the method.

j.habermann, post #20: Members outside these two jurisdictions reading this thread should note that none of it transfers, including the parts that sound general. Go to post

Posting my irish differences numbers with the method attached so they can be discounted properly. Uncontrolled, unblinded, and collected by someone who wanted a particular answer.

Pharmacy practice varies between pharmacies and is not deducible from the regulatory position. Two people can honestly report opposite experiences.

I looked this up rather than remembered it, which is the right order.

I would keep irish differences and the decision it usually gets used for separate in this thread. They are related and they are not the same question, and merging them is why the last one went badly.

The practical version of irish differences is three sentences long. The rigorous version is three pages and reaches the same conclusion with the conditions attached.

Cross-border arrangements: some people source from other EU countries. Rules on import for personal use are changing post-Brexit. Current status requires checking with UKVI.

Worth checking against a second source before it gets quoted onward.

Reading this irish differences thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.

owen.brady, post #25: Taking post #22 at face value and following it one step further. Date the claim and say whether it is the United Kingdom or Ireland. They are different regulatory jurisdictions and the answer is frequently different. I am aware this is the third time this month I have made this point. Go to post

Building on post #40 rather than restating it.

What I would check first on irish differences is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph.

Post #42 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Private prescribing arrangements differ in what they include, and the differences are more consequential than the headline price.

Second-hand, so weight it accordingly.

Right, and stated more narrowly than I would have dared to state it.

Post #44 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

On irish differences, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one.

Where a member reports a decision, the useful detail is the stated reason rather than the outcome, because the reason is what generalises.

Reading it again, the caveat matters more than the finding.

On irish differences the community has more anecdote than the confidence in this thread implies, and I include my own contribution in that.

I read post #47 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Compounding pharmacies: UK allows compounding under specific conditions when a licensed product is unavailable. That is not a front-line option but becomes relevant during shortages.

On post #49 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Since irish differences keeps coming up, it should probably be a maintained page rather than a recurring thread. I am happy to draft it if someone with more direct experience will review it.

Picking up post #49: that is the part I would want checked first.

The most useful reply I ever got about irish differences was a request to state my units. It sounds like pedantry and it has saved me twice.

Occupational health screening: some UK occupations require medical checks. Disclosure of weight-loss medication might be relevant to employment screening; understand your obligations.

Counterpoint on irish differences, offered without confidence: the same observation is consistent with a much duller explanation, and nobody has ruled the dull one out.

Post #53 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Anyone quoting an eligibility threshold should say which document it comes from. The thresholds have changed and the old ones are still circulating.

The number is defensible. The precision I gave it is not.

Irish differences is a question about a distribution, not about a value, and treating it as a value is what produces the confident wrong answers.

Summarising the irish differences thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

I read the earlier replies on irish differences twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.
