Pre-registering a personal experiment, seriously — a second dataset posts 61–67

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

The arithmetic in post #59 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

An update on my earlier Pre-registering a personal experiment post: the pattern held for another six weeks and then stopped, which I did not predict and cannot explain.

Record everything that changed, not just the intervention. Personal experiments are confounded by life, and the confounders are only recoverable if they were written down.

Speaking for myself and not for anyone else who has posted here.

i.lehtinen, post #18: Reading back through the Pre-registering a personal experiment threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap. Go to post

Reporting the whole series rather than the interesting segment is the discipline that makes personal data worth reading. Selective reporting is the default without effort.

bench_peak, post #32: Where the Pre-registering a personal experiment reasoning breaks down for me is the step from the group result to the individual case. That step is almost never argued for. Go to post

The strongest argument against my own position on Pre-registering a personal experiment, stated as well as I can state it, since nobody else has yet.

Having read the whole Pre-registering a personal experiment thread before replying: the question in the first post has not actually been answered yet, and three of us have answered a nearby one instead.

A photograph or a device reading is a harder record than a recollection, and where one is available it should be the record.

Fine by me. I had wanted a stronger conclusion and there is not one available.
