Reading U-100 graduations, with a conversion table posts 31–42

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Nothing here is medical advice, and anybody uncertain about technique can have it demonstrated by a nurse or a pharmacist in five minutes, which is a better use of the time than reading about it.

b.okonkwo, post #16: Confirming post #13 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person. Practical note on reading U-100 graduations: write down what you expect before you look. The number of times I have found what I went looking for is higher than chance would allow. Go to post

Source for the reading U-100 graduations figure, since it was asked for. It is in the discussion rather than the abstract, which is why the version circulating is stronger than the paper is.

Reading the surrounding paragraph is worth the two minutes. The authors are more careful than their summarisers.

Everything in post #31 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Speaking only to reading U-100 graduations as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect.

Narrowing post #31, because the general version has more than one answer.

Sharps containers are a legal requirement for disposal in several jurisdictions and a sensible precaution everywhere. A rigid sealed container is the minimum.

That is my reading. Someone else read the same page differently and was reasonable.

Post #34 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Two things can be true about reading U-100 graduations at once: the mechanism is plausible and the evidence for the size of the effect is thin. Most of the argument here is people defending the first against attacks on the second.

s.rasmussen, post #11: Where I part company with post #9, and it is a narrow parting. A request rather than an answer: could whoever has the primary source for reading U-100 graduations post it? I have seen the claim three times this month and each version had lost a qualifier. Go to post

Answering the question post #36 raises rather than the one it answers.

U-100 means the barrel is graduated for a solution containing one hundred units of insulin per millilitre. For anything that is not insulin, the units are simply hundredths of a millilitre.

Posting it because the silence on this was starting to look like agreement.

Check what the graduations actually say rather than what you expect. A syringe marked in units and one marked in millilitres look similar at a glance and are not the same instrument.

Second-hand, so weight it accordingly.

Saving this. It is the version I will quote when the question comes round again.

Before the thread moves on from reading U-100 graduations — what is the sample size behind the claim? I am not being difficult; I have seen the same figure quoted from an n of four and from an n of four hundred.

If your calculated volume is under two graduations, choose a lower concentration rather than trying to read between marks. Precision comes from the preparation, not the eye.
