Reading back through the panel threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

What I would want before treating panel as settled: the method, the sample, and whether anyone tried to find the opposite result. Two of the three are usually missing.

Time of day: some biomarkers vary across the day. Cortisol in the morning differs from cortisol in the evening. Comparing results from different times of day is comparing things that are not the same.

I have separated what I observed from what I concluded, which does not always happen.

Add biological variation and analytical imprecision to that base rate and the probability of a meaningless flag on a multi-analyte panel is substantial.

Post #66 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Taking panel seriously for a moment rather than deflecting: the honest position is that the community has observations and no controlled comparison, and those two things support very different sentences.

Post #70 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

General information rather than advice about anyone's care. A single value outside a reference interval, on a single draw, in an otherwise unremarkable panel, is usually uninformative.

I would call that likely rather than established.

Repeat before acting is standard practice for an isolated abnormal result on most analytes, and it is standard for a reason.

Correct me on the arithmetic if it is wrong; I would rather know.

Adding the measurement that post #74 says would settle it.

Two claims get bundled together under panel and they need separating. The descriptive one — this is what was observed — is usually well supported. The causal one — this is why — usually is not.

Almost every disagreement in threads like this one dissolves once you say which of the two you are making.

Glycaemic markers integrate over different periods. A point glucose and a longer-term marker disagreeing is not a contradiction; it is two different questions.

That has been true for the cases I have seen and I have not seen many.

Panel is well covered in the tag pages, and the older discussions are better than the recent ones because they were argued out properly. Worth twenty minutes before adding to this one.

Practical answer on panel, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not.
