Working notes on circumference measurements rather than a conclusion. I would rather post the reasoning while it can still be corrected than post the answer once I am committed to it.

Everything below is checkable. Where I have taken a figure from somewhere else I have said where; where I have estimated, I have said that too.

The opening post answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Bone mineral density changes with substantial weight loss are measurable and slow, and are one of the better reasons to have a baseline scan.

Worth one more sentence than it usually gets.

Coming back to post #2, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry): the standard for body composition in research. Precision is roughly ±1 kg for lean mass. Two scans six months apart on the same machine with the same technician give you useful information. Two scans six weeks apart on different machines tell you about the machines.

The most useful protocol is the one you will actually repeat identically. An imperfect measurement repeated consistently beats a better one repeated carelessly.

Small point, but it is the one that usually catches people.

Comparing a body composition result against a population reference is a different exercise from tracking your own change, and the second is what most people want.

I have kept the units in throughout, for the obvious reason.

I read post #6 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Marking my uncertainty on circumference measurements explicitly. I am confident about the direction, much less confident about the size, and not confident at all that it generalises past the case in the first post.

Picking up post #8: that is the part I would want checked first.

The version of circumference measurements that circulates here is a simplification of a simplification. It is not wrong, but it has lost the conditions under which it holds, and those conditions are where the interesting cases live.

Changes during titration: measuring body composition during active titration is less useful than measuring after dose is stable. Titration causes fluid shifts that confound body composition.

Maintenance phase: tracking body composition during maintenance (weight stable) is different from tracking during active loss. Changes are smaller and precision becomes more important.

Post #9 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Resting metabolic rate: body composition affects metabolic rate. As fat mass decreases and lean mass is maintained, metabolic rate is usually maintained better than with simple weight loss alone.

I would put this at better than even and not much better.

Building on post #13 rather than restating it.

On circumference measurements, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one.

One caution on circumference measurements: everything above assumes the underlying documentation is what it claims to be. That assumption is doing real work and is rarely stated.

Neither method is capable of detecting the month-to-month changes that people report detecting month to month.

The uncertainty is in the assumption, not in the calculation.

Report the method with the number, always. A composition figure without the method is not comparable to anything, including your own previous figure.

Posted with less confidence than the sentence structure implies.

Percentage body fat is a ratio, so it changes when either component changes. A rising percentage during weight loss is arithmetic before it is physiology.

Reporting the observation and leaving the explanation open deliberately.

Adding the measurement that post #17 says would settle it.

The reason circumference measurements is hard to answer is that the obvious measurement and the relevant quantity are not the same thing, and substituting one for the other is silent.

Circumference measurements has a well-known answer and a correct answer, and the interesting work is establishing that they are the same. Nobody has done that here yet.

Photographs under fixed lighting and posture are a genuine record and are the hardest of these to standardise.

On post #20 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

The claim about circumference measurements upthread is stronger than its source supports. I have read the source. The source says "associated with" and the post says "causes".

My understanding of circumference measurements is a few years old and may have been superseded. If it has been, I would genuinely like to know rather than keep repeating it.

Circumference measurements at marked sites, taken consistently, track composition change better than most people expect for the cost.

Worth separating two things that post #24 runs together.

Lean mass in these measurements includes water, so a change in hydration appears as a change in lean mass.

Practical experience of circumference measurements, offered as one case with the conditions stated, not as a general finding. Conditions first, because they are what make it interpretable.
