Personal import allowances, compared — a second dataset — setting out what I have, and where I think it stops being reliable.

Posting a small dataset on Personal import allowances. It is mine, it is uncontrolled, and the method is stated so it can be discounted appropriately.

What I would like is not agreement but a second dataset collected by someone with no stake in mine. If one exists I would rather read it than argue for this one.

Distinguishing three things in the Personal import allowances discussion that keep getting used interchangeably: the observation, the proposed mechanism, and the recommendation that gets attached to both.

An update on my earlier Personal import allowances post: the pattern held for another six weeks and then stopped, which I did not predict and cannot explain.

Post #3 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Nothing here is legal advice, and in this subcategory that caveat is doing real work rather than sitting decoratively at the end.

Import rules for personal quantities are jurisdiction-specific and change without much publicity. Establishing your own position is unavoidable.

Personal import allowances would be much easier to settle if anyone reported the denominator. Almost nobody reports the denominator.

What I would tell a new member reading about Personal import allowances for the first time: the confident posts are not the reliable ones, and the reliable ones are longer.

Post #7 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

A regional experience posted here should say which year it describes. The archive keeps these permanently and they age faster than anything else on the site.

That is the version I use. It may not be the version that is correct.

Building on post #7 rather than restating it.

Regional practice around what a pharmacy will and will not do varies enormously and is not deducible from the regulatory position.

Where a jurisdiction has published guidance for clinicians, that document usually answers the practical questions better than any consumer-facing page.

I have left out the parts I could not verify.

On Personal import allowances I would separate what is worth knowing from what is worth acting on. The first list is long and the second is short, and conflating them is how threads get heated.

Worth separating two things that post #10 runs together.

Reporting rather than recommending, on Personal import allowances. What happened is above. Whether it should have is a different question and not one I am qualified to answer.

It is a small point and it changes the answer, which is an awkward combination.

Counterpoint on Personal import allowances, offered without confidence: the same observation is consistent with a much duller explanation, and nobody has ruled the dull one out.

Taking post #16 at face value and following it one step further.

What I can speak to on Personal import allowances is narrow, so I will keep it narrow rather than generalising from it. Beyond that boundary I do not know.

Post #14 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Where a compound is approved under a different trade name in another market, searching the local name finds documents the English name does not.

One more thing on Personal import allowances that took me far too long to see: the two figures people quote are not measuring the same quantity. Once you notice that, the apparent contradiction disappears.

Everything in post #18 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Summarising the Personal import allowances thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

Coming back to post #19, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

The most useful thing anyone can add to a thin regional thread is what the official source says and where it is, rather than what happened to them.

Post #19 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Whatever the answer on Personal import allowances turns out to be, the method for getting there is the same: state the assumption, do the arithmetic in public, invite the correction.

Customs and import outcomes: different routes have different seizure rates. Some countries are stricter on peptide imports than others. History on a route is more predictive than theory.

Adding the caveat now so it does not have to be extracted later.

Reading this Personal import allowances thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.

I read post #23 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Adding a small correction to the Personal import allowances summary above rather than a disagreement with it. The substance holds; one of the figures is out by a factor that matters.

Summaries lag badly in this area. Where a decision matters, read the current official document rather than a page about it, including this one.

The rule of thumb is fine; the edge cases are where it earns its keep.

Both are useful and they are different contributions. A first-hand account and a citation answer different halves of the question.

I am aware this is the third time this month I have made this point.

Import rules for personal use: what you can import for personal use depends on your country's rules, not on where it is sold. Checking your country's rules before ordering is prudent.

A definition problem is doing most of the work in this Personal import allowances discussion. Once the term is pinned down I suspect the disagreement mostly goes away and what is left is small.

I would be cautious about generalising from the Personal import allowances example above. It is a good example. It is one example.
