Post #2 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

A cold pack still solid on day seven is a genuinely good sign about the packing and says nothing about days two through six.

Genuinely open to being wrong about this one.

Shipping container and cold packs: reputable suppliers use insulated containers with cold packs designed to arrive cool. Checking on arrival that cold packs are still cold is a sign the chain was maintained.

Caveat: everything above assumes the paperwork is what it says it is.

Temperature excursions: brief excursions above 8 °C are tolerable for most compounds. Hours to a day at room temperature is usually acceptable. Days to weeks at room temperature risks degradation.

I am confident about the direction and much less about the magnitude.

Building on post #6 rather than restating it.

Suppliers that reship after a documented excursion without argument are doing something commercially costly, and it is worth recording when they do.

If that is already documented somewhere, ignore me and link it.

Post #5 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Temperature loggers in the parcel exist and are occasionally used for high-value shipments. They are the only thing that turns an argument about transit into a record.

The strength of my opinion here exceeds the strength of my evidence.

Domestic refrigeration: most lyophilised peptides are stored at 2–8 °C (35–46 °F). That is standard refrigerator temperature. Check your refrigerator's actual temperature; some are warmer than the label.

It is the kind of thing that is obvious once and never again.

Small methodological point on Temperature loggers worth the money: repeating a measurement is cheap and resolves most of what is being argued about here at no cost to anyone.

Temperature loggers worth the money looks different depending on whether you are reading the primary literature or the summaries of it, and the difference is not in our favour.

If you are not going to be there, arranging a secure delivery point is worth more than any packing decision the supplier can make.

I would rather say I do not know than round it up to an answer.

Narrowing post #15, because the general version has more than one answer.

A temperature indicator that has tripped tells you a threshold was crossed. It does not tell you for how long, and duration is most of what determines whether anything happened.

The conclusion is tentative; the arithmetic underneath it is not.

I read post #15 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Careful with the language on Temperature loggers worth the money. "Not detected" and "not present" are different findings and the first is a statement about the method.

Post #19 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Light protection: avoid direct sunlight and UV exposure. Amber vials or opaque containers reduce light exposure. For short-term storage, keeping the vial in its original packaging (often opaque) usually suffices.

Practical answer on Temperature loggers worth the money, since the theoretical one is upthread: do the simplest check first, write down the result, and only then decide whether the complicated explanation is needed. It usually is not.

Summer routes and winter routes are genuinely different problems, and a supplier that changes its packing between them is doing something rather than nothing.

The rule of thumb is fine; the edge cases are where it earns its keep.

Temperature loggers worth the money is a question about a distribution, not about a value, and treating it as a value is what produces the confident wrong answers.

Taking post #25 at face value and following it one step further.

Assessing an excursion: if a package sat at room temperature for a time, visual inspection (cloudiness, discoloration, particles) can alert you to problems. Not visible does not mean not damaged, but visible problems are a reason to contact the supplier.

I have deliberately not rounded that, because the rounding is where the argument starts.

A phase-change pack holds a defined temperature while it changes state and then behaves like anything else. A gel pack starts cold and warms continuously. They are different tools for different transit lengths.

That is the version I would defend. It is not the version I started with.
