Transporting a vial, and specifically the version of it that the documentation does not cover. The maintained page handles the general case well and stops exactly where my question starts.

Setting out the gap in case it is a gap in the page rather than a gap in what is known.

Nobody has said the unglamorous part of transporting a vial yet, so: most of the variation is explained by things that are boring to write about and easy to check.

Taking post #2 at face value and following it one step further.

Visible particulate is a strong signal in the other direction: it is a reason to stop and ask rather than to filter and proceed.

The opening post and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Container choice matters: the material of the vial, the rubber closure, the fill volume all affect how quickly the contents degrade. Smaller fill volumes lose less to adsorption. Glass vials lose less to leaching than plastics.

The honest answer is that it depends, and here is what it depends on.

Transporting a vial is well covered in the tag pages, and the older discussions are better than the recent ones because they were argued out properly. Worth twenty minutes before adding to this one.

Building on post #6 rather than restating it.

Clarity is a weak test. A solution can lose a significant fraction of its active content to degradation or adsorption while remaining perfectly clear.

I would be interested in a counterexample if anyone has one.

Taking transporting a vial seriously for a moment rather than deflecting: the honest position is that the community has observations and no controlled comparison, and those two things support very different sentences.

Where I part company with post #7, and it is a narrow parting.

Temperature excursions in transit are common and are not all equal. A few hours warm is a different event from three days warm, and neither is visible in the vial on arrival.

Correct me on the arithmetic if it is wrong; I would rather know.

Temperature excursions: if a vial sat at room temperature for a time, the question is whether the excursion was long enough to cause damage. Hours at room temperature is usually low risk. Days to weeks raises the risk. If you are unsure, contacting the supplier is more informative than guessing.

I had written a reply contradicting post #11 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Two sentences on transporting a vial and then I will stop, because the rest is speculation and the thread is better without mine.

What is documented is narrow. What is inferred from it is broad. The gap between them is where every argument here lives.

Confirming post #15 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

Light protection is easy and cheap. The original carton exists for a reason and a vial stored in it is protected without anybody having to think about it again.

The general case is well covered; this is the awkward specific one.

If you are storing for long periods and light matters, this is worth doing. For short-term prepared solutions, ordinary storage away from direct sunlight is usually adequate. Go to post

Transporting a vial: I would want to see the raw numbers rather than the summary before agreeing. Summaries lose exactly the information that would settle this.

The bit of transporting a vial that nobody enjoys is that the answer changes depending on what you are trying to decide with it. Say what the decision is and the thread will converge.

Second-hand on transporting a vial, so weight it accordingly — someone whose method I trust told me this and I have not verified it myself.

Post #20 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Two people in this thread mean different things by transporting a vial and are disagreeing about the definition while believing they are disagreeing about the facts. Worth pausing to define it.

The version of transporting a vial that circulates here is a simplification of a simplification. It is not wrong, but it has lost the conditions under which it holds, and those conditions are where the interesting cases live.

Dating prepared solutions: write the date reconstitution on the vial in permanent marker. If you later need to know whether it has been sitting for weeks or days, the date tells you. Guessing on this is where errors accumulate.

On post #22 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Vial integrity: once a vial is entered with a needle repeatedly, the rubber closure degrades and the integrity fails. Using the same vial repeatedly over weeks or months carries increasing risk of contamination. Single-use vials entered once are lowest risk.
