A fridge failure and how I assessed the contents afterwards

GC
glossary_checkTL2Member25 Jan 2026#1

A fridge failure and how I assessed the contents afterwards Writing it up because I had to work it out twice and would rather nobody else did.

The question about fridge failure that I actually want answered is the second one below. The first is context and I have kept it short.

Both are stated with units, and I have said what I already checked so that nobody repeats it.

Two things can be true about fridge failure at once: the mechanism is plausible and the evidence for the size of the effect is thin. Most of the argument here is people defending the first against attacks on the second.

I read the opening post twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

The confident answers on fridge failure and the well-sourced answers are not the same answers, which is the most useful thing I have learned reading this category.

The opening post answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Shipment during summer or to hot climates: consider shipping to a cold-storage facility rather than to home if temperatures will be high. Alternatively, time shipment to arrive when you can refrigerate immediately.

Fridge failure is one of those subjects where the general answer and the answer for a specific case diverge, and the thread will go in circles until someone says which one is being asked for.

Practical note on fridge failure: write down what you expect before you look. The number of times I have found what I went looking for is higher than chance would allow.

Everything in post #5 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have.

Dry ice is rarely used for this material and brings its own transport constraints. Its absence is not a shortcoming.

Photographing the parcel on arrival, before opening, takes ten seconds and is the difference between a report and a recollection.

The strength of my opinion here exceeds the strength of my evidence.

Reading this fridge failure thread as someone who came in with a fixed view: the third and seventh replies moved me and the confident ones did not.

Post #9 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

The number people quote for fridge failure is a central estimate presented without its interval, and the interval is wide enough that the estimate is nearly uninformative on its own.

Post #10 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Arrival condition tells you about the last few hours and very little about the middle of the journey. A pack that is soft on arrival may have been soft for four days or for four hours.

I had read the opposite somewhere and cannot now find where, which tells me something.

Where I have landed on fridge failure, having got it wrong once in public: the direction is clear, the magnitude is not, and anyone quoting a precise magnitude has borrowed it from somewhere that did not measure it.

On post #13 — agreed on the reasoning, with one qualification.

Worth separating fridge failure as a question about the compound from fridge failure as a question about the documentation. They get answered by different people and only one of them is answerable here.

Confirming post #14 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

The honest summary: pack quality is visible, transit history is not, and only the second determines what happened to the material.

Posting it because the silence on this was starting to look like agreement.

I had written a reply contradicting post #13 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

I keep a log for fridge failure specifically because my memory of it turned out to be systematically wrong in one direction. Six weeks of notes cost nothing and settled it.

Before the thread moves on from fridge failure — what is the sample size behind the claim? I am not being difficult; I have seen the same figure quoted from an n of four and from an n of four hundred.

Shipping container and cold packs: reputable suppliers use insulated containers with cold packs designed to arrive cool. Checking on arrival that cold packs are still cold is a sign the chain was maintained.

Second-hand, so weight it accordingly.

Understood, and I withdraw the assumption I opened with.
