A narrow question about travel coolers, deliberately narrow, because the broad version has been asked here four times and produced four long threads and no answer.

One question, stated units, stated method, and what I have already ruled out.

Coming back to the opening post, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Adding a null result on travel coolers. I looked, carefully, and found nothing, and null results deserve posting precisely because they never are.

Lyophilised material is far more tolerant of a warm transit than a solution would be, which is why suppliers ship dry and why an excursion is not automatically a loss.

If that reads as pedantic, it is, and it has saved me twice.

Where the travel coolers reasoning breaks down for me is the step from the group result to the individual case. That step is almost never argued for.

The practical question after a warm arrival is what to do, and there is no test at home that answers it. Independent testing is the only route to an actual answer.

Post #4 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Customs holds are the most common cause of an unexpectedly long transit, and they are also the segment nobody has visibility of. Tracking gaps are usually that rather than a lost parcel.

A parcel sitting in a vehicle or a depot in a hot month is the excursion that matters and the one nobody sees. Delivery timing is part of the cold chain.

If it helps: the failure mode here is usually boring rather than dramatic.

Two claims get bundled together under travel coolers and they need separating. The descriptive one — this is what was observed — is usually well supported. The causal one — this is why — usually is not.

Almost every disagreement in threads like this one dissolves once you say which of the two you are making.

I had written a reply contradicting post #11 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

Recording arrival condition on ordinary deliveries is what makes the record useful. A file containing only the bad arrivals cannot tell you how often they happen.

Light protection: avoid direct sunlight and UV exposure. Amber vials or opaque containers reduce light exposure. For short-term storage, keeping the vial in its original packaging (often opaque) usually suffices.

I would rather say I do not know than round it up to an answer.

A cold pack still solid on day seven is a genuinely good sign about the packing and says nothing about days two through six.

The disagreement above is smaller than it looks once the terms are fixed.

Post #15 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

I would rather this thread reach "we do not know" about travel coolers than reach a confident answer that nobody can support when asked.

Speaking only to travel coolers as I have actually seen it, rather than as it is usually described: the effect is real, it is smaller than the thread suggests, and the variance between people is larger than the effect.

Insulation performance depends on the mass of the coolant more than on the thickness of the box. A large pack in a modest box outperforms a small pack in a good one.

Adding the caveat now so it does not have to be extracted later.

On travel coolers, I would rather understate and be corrected upward than overstate and be quoted. That is a house style here and it is a good one.

Travel coolers was covered in the wiki last year and the page has a review date on it, which is a better starting point than my memory of a thread.

What I would check first on travel coolers is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph.

I read post #22 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Reconstituted solutions: once reconstituted, solutions are less stable than lyophilised powder. Refrigerate prepared solutions immediately after preparation. Most stability claims assume refrigeration.

Speaking for myself and not for anyone else who has posted here.

Travel with medication: carrying a vial across borders requires planning if temperatures will exceed the range or if journey time is long. Insulated travel cases with ice packs are common solutions.

I would treat the number as indicative rather than as a measurement.

The thing about travel coolers that took me longest to accept is that a plausible mechanism is not evidence of an effect. It is a reason to look, not a result.
