Why the timeline is on the right and not the left

Solved
Solved by PharmNotes_Whitfield in post #7
The reason timeline is hard to answer is that the obvious measurement and the relevant quantity are not the same thing, and substituting one for the other is silent.

Why the timeline is on the right and not the left — that is the question, and I have not found it answered plainly anywhere I have looked.

Something about timeline does not reconcile and I would like a second pair of eyes before I decide which half is wrong.

Two sources, both reputable, giving figures that cannot both be right unless they are measuring different quantities. My suspicion is that they are, and I cannot see how.

Timeline was covered in the wiki last year and the page has a review date on it, which is a better starting point than my memory of a thread.

Reporting a real defect: on a long topic the jump-to-post link scrolls to the right post but the highlight does not fire on the first load. Second load is fine. Reproducible on my end, twice.

I have kept the units in throughout, for the obvious reason.

Practical experience of timeline, offered as one case with the conditions stated, not as a general finding. Conditions first, because they are what make it interpretable.

Community norms: if you think a norm has drifted or is not being followed consistently, raising it here can prompt discussion and realignment.

A modest claim, modestly supported.

Post #6 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Two sentences on timeline and then I will stop, because the rest is speculation and the thread is better without mine.

What is documented is narrow. What is inferred from it is broad. The gap between them is where every argument here lives.

Staff post. Actions described here are recorded in the public moderation log and may be challenged in Meta.

Staff answer. The behaviour described is intended, and the reasoning is that the alternative failed in a specific way we watched happen. Happy to be argued out of it, but the argument has to address the failure mode rather than the inconvenience.

The evidence for this is thinner than the way I have phrased it suggests.

Timeline: I would want to see the raw numbers rather than the summary before agreeing. Summaries lose exactly the information that would settle this.

Timeline is well covered in the tag pages, and the older discussions are better than the recent ones because they were argued out properly. Worth twenty minutes before adding to this one.

Post #9 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

Seconding that. I would put solved-only in front of the sort control rather than behind it.

Adding it because I spent an afternoon working it out and nobody should have to twice.

Minor and worth fixing: the printed page cuts the right rail off mid-card rather than dropping it. Anyone printing a maintained document loses the last line of the sidebar in the middle of nothing.

The claim is narrower than it sounds, and deliberately so.

Nobody has said the unglamorous part of timeline yet, so: most of the variation is explained by things that are boring to write about and easy to check.

Post #13 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Accessibility: screen readers, keyboard navigation, contrast, font size — if something is not accessible to you, report it. Accessibility matters.

Happy to be corrected if someone holds better data than mine.

What I would want before treating timeline as settled: the method, the sample, and whether anyone tried to find the opposite result. Two of the three are usually missing.

My experience of timeline contradicts the reply above. I am posting it as a data point rather than as a refutation, because one person's experience is exactly that.

Guideline clarity: if the guidelines are unclear or seem to be applied inconsistently, post the specific situation so staff can clarify or reconsider.

I would rather post the uncertainty than round it away.

This settles it for me, at least until somebody posts a reason it should not.

Building on post #21 rather than restating it.

Something worth flagging about timeline: the strongest-sounding claims in this thread are the ones with no source attached, which is the usual pattern and not a coincidence.

Reframing timeline slightly, because I think the disagreement is about the question rather than the answer. If the question is "does it happen", yes. If it is "how often", nobody here knows.

Post #23 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Not a bug, but worth saying: the moderation log is paginated at twenty-five entries and there is no way to filter it by rule. Being able to read every R6 action in sequence would be genuinely instructive.

I would be interested in a counterexample if anyone has one.

I read post #24 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

If you are new and reading this thread for the answer to timeline: the answer is conditional, the conditions are in the third reply, and the rest of the thread is worth skipping.

Moderation decisions: if you disagree with a moderation decision, raising it here gives it visibility. Staff will reconsider if you make a substantive case.

Before the thread moves on from timeline — what is the sample size behind the claim? I am not being difficult; I have seen the same figure quoted from an n of four and from an n of four hundred.
