An 18-month record including the parts that went badly

PO
p.onwukaTL217 Apr 2026#1

An 18-month record including the parts that went badly — setting out what I have, and where I think it stops being reliable.

Asking about 18-month record on behalf of the question I keep seeing asked badly, including by me.

Framed properly it is answerable. Framed the usual way it is not, and that is most of why the previous threads went nowhere.

I would call the community position on 18-month record likely rather than established, and I would be comfortable defending that hedge.

Coming back to the opening post, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

18-month record is a question about a distribution, not about a value, and treating it as a value is what produces the confident wrong answers.

Post #3 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

Maintenance series are the ones this subcategory needs most and receives least. The interesting questions all change once loss stops.

The right answer here may simply be that it has not been measured.

Menstrual cycle: for people who menstruate, weight can shift by several pounds across the cycle due to fluid retention and other factors. Noting cycle phase when weighing reduces apparent noise.

Adding a note of thanks rather than an opinion. I did not know most of that.

What I can speak to on 18-month record is narrow, so I will keep it narrow rather than generalising from it. Beyond that boundary I do not know.

Post #7 answers the question as asked. The question underneath it is different.

Summarising the 18-month record thread so far, since it is long and the answer is buried: the first reply has the method, the fourth has the correction to it, and the rest is people agreeing at length.

Answering the question post #7 raises rather than the one it answers.

A single scale used throughout beats a more accurate scale introduced halfway through. Consistency beats accuracy for a trend.

Happy to expand any of that if it is the useful part.

The arithmetic in post #7 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

The best progress reports here read as records rather than as arguments, and that difference is visible within a sentence.

Nobody has said the unglamorous part of 18-month record yet, so: most of the variation is explained by things that are boring to write about and easy to check.

Worth separating two things that post #10 runs together.

Protein intake and resistance training: both self-reported and therefore optimistic in most reports. Recording them anyway creates a record you can look back on.

That is all I can say without guessing.

Adding a data point of agreement rather than a data point.

Self-reported intake is optimistic in a consistent direction, and saying so in your own report is more credible than not.

Taking post #12 at face value and following it one step further.

The question underneath 18-month record is usually "how would I tell?" rather than "what is true?", and that one has a method attached to it.

Write down what you would expect to see under each hypothesis before you collect anything. If they predict the same observation, collecting it will not help.

Post #14 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

I would put moderate confidence on the mainstream reading of 18-month record and no more. That is not scepticism for its own sake; it is where the sourcing actually stops.

Non-scale victories: muscle gain or maintenance, clothing fit, energy level, and capability (like climbing stairs without breathlessness) are measurements that scale-based weight misses.

Plateaus and resets: if weight loss stalls and then resumes, that is ordinary. It is not evidence that the medication stopped working. It is not evidence that it is still working either. It is a data point in a longer record.

If that is already documented somewhere, ignore me and link it.

Nothing here is medical advice and a progress report is a description of what happened to one person under uncontrolled conditions.

Checked the 18-month record claim against the primary source this morning. It survives, with a narrower scope than the version quoted here. Posting the narrower scope.

Reporting rather than recommending, on 18-month record. What happened is above. Whether it should have is a different question and not one I am qualified to answer.

Post #19 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

Seasonal patterns: some people report weight loss is slower in winter than summer. Body composition and activity changes might contribute. Noting the season is useful context.

Someone will know this better than I do and I hope they say so.

If a pattern survives a rolling-mean treatment it is worth explaining. Most do not, and that is the useful finding.

Confirming post #23 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

18-month record came up in a thread eighteen months ago and was answered well. I cannot find it, which is itself the problem, so here is the reconstruction.

I read the earlier replies on 18-month record twice before writing this, because I had assumed the opposite and wanted to be sure I was disagreeing with what was said rather than what I expected.

Rate of change matters more than the absolute number for most of the questions people ask about their own series.

I have seen it go both ways, which is why I hedge.

Post #27 is right about the mechanism and I think understates the practical bit.

The arithmetic on 18-month record is the easy part and it is where the errors are, which is an uncomfortable combination. Show your working and someone will catch it.
