The mass-error checker and its intended scope posts 151–168

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

Post #150 put the caveat in the right place and I want to underline it.

Precision and significant figures: the calculators do not round to match your input precision. If you input values to one decimal place, the output might have more. Use significant figures appropriate to your input precision.

I would want a second opinion before relying on that.

f.novak, post #72: Worth separating two things that post #71 runs together. Dose equivalence calculator: compounds have different potencies. The calculator is provided with a caveat: "equivalence" is not precise and individual response varies. It is a rough starting point, not a dose prescription. Go to post

If you are new and reading this thread for the answer to mass-error checker: the answer is conditional, the conditions are in the third reply, and the rest of the thread is worth skipping.

Significant figures in the output should not exceed what the inputs support. A concentration calculated from a nominal vial mass is not known to four decimal places.

Where I part company with post #154, and it is a narrow parting.

The calculators maintained on this site are open-source and verifiable. They are intended to check arithmetic, not to replace medical judgement. Using them is optional and they are provided for convenience.

lyophil_margin, post #58: Everything in post #56 holds. The case it does not cover is the one I have. What I want from this mass-error checker thread is the list of things that would need to be true for the claim to hold. If we can write that list, we can check it. Go to post

Post #154 is the version of this I will quote in future. One addition.

Second-hand on mass-error checker, so weight it accordingly — someone whose method I trust told me this and I have not verified it myself.

The bit of mass-error checker that nobody enjoys is that the answer changes depending on what you are trying to decide with it. Say what the decision is and the thread will converge.

Noted, and I have changed what I was going to do on the strength of it.

Tools that run entirely in the browser send nothing anywhere, which matters more to some people here than others and is worth stating either way.

OTeixeira, post #92: Answering the question post #88 raises rather than the one it answers. A note on scope: what I am saying about mass-error checker applies to the case in the first post and I would not extend it further without checking. Go to post

Building on post #159 rather than restating it.

Taking mass-error checker seriously for a moment rather than deflecting: the honest position is that the community has observations and no controlled comparison, and those two things support very different sentences.

Good question, well framed, and I would like to see it answered properly.

Marking my uncertainty on mass-error checker explicitly. I am confident about the direction, much less confident about the size, and not confident at all that it generalises past the case in the first post.

If someone has run mass-error checker properly I would rather read that than my own reconstruction of it. Posting mine only because the thread has gone quiet.

Adding the measurement that post #165 says would settle it.

A calculator that shows its working is worth ten that give an answer. The whole value is being able to see which step you disagree with.

r.bruun, post #59: The parts-per-million mass-error calculation is simple enough to do mentally to one significant figure, which is a good habit because it catches an order-of-magnitude slip immediately. Go to post

Post #164 describes the usual case. This is about the unusual one.

A methods point on mass-error checker rather than a substantive one: if the comparison is not like for like, the difference you are measuring is the difference in method.
