Body image changing more slowly than the body posts 121–137

This is a continuation of a long topic, addressed by post number rather than by page. Start at post 1.

I would be cautious about generalising from the body image example above. It is a good example. It is one example.

Identity and self-image: for some people, weight and body size are central to identity. Large change to body size can affect identity. This is not pathological; it is human.

Confirming post #121 from a second method, which matters more than confirming it from a second person.

A definition problem is doing most of the work in this body image discussion. Once the term is pinned down I suspect the disagreement mostly goes away and what is left is small.

I had written a reply contradicting post #122 and deleted it. Here is what survived.

What I would check first on body image is whether the thing being measured moved or whether the way of measuring it moved. Those look identical in a graph.

If you are in crisis, contact a local emergency or crisis service rather than posting. A volunteer forum cannot help and waiting costs time.

Not disagreeing with anyone above, just adding the bit I keep having to look up.

Filing a mild objection to the consensus on body image. Mild because I might be wrong; an objection because nobody has addressed the case that does not fit.

a.zamora, post #102: An observation about body image that I cannot explain and am posting anyway, on the principle that unexplained observations are more useful public than private. Go to post

Coming back to post #126, because the follow-up matters more than the original answer.

Body image was covered in the wiki last year and the page has a review date on it, which is a better starting point than my memory of a thread.

The arithmetic in post #128 is right; the assumption feeding it is the part to check.

Motivation and expectation: starting with clear motivation and realistic expectations about what will happen and when helps with psychological adjustment.

If that reads as pedantic, it is, and it has saved me twice.

Answering the question post #126 raises rather than the one it answers.

The number people quote for body image is a central estimate presented without its interval, and the interval is wide enough that the estimate is nearly uninformative on its own.

Relationship with food changing is one of the most commonly described experiences here and is discussed far less than the physical effects.

Marking my uncertainty on body image explicitly. I am confident about the direction, much less confident about the size, and not confident at all that it generalises past the case in the first post.

Nothing here is medical advice and several members in this subcategory say plainly that they are describing their own experience only.

I would be glad to be shown a cleaner way of putting this.

Narrowing post #133, because the general version has more than one answer.

Reading back through the body image threads from last year, the same three questions come up every time and only one of them has ever been answered properly. That seems like a documentation gap rather than a knowledge gap.

Where a member is finding this hard, the useful reply is usually a question rather than an answer, and this subcategory does that well.

Worth reading the earlier posts in this thread before acting on mine.

Body image and weight loss: large weight loss changes a person's relationship with their body in ways that can be psychologically complex. Some of that is positive; some might involve adjustment or processing.

That is one dataset and I would not build a rule on it.

j.sorensen, post #75: Narrowing post #74, because the general version has more than one answer. I would keep body image and the decision it usually gets used for separate in this thread. They are related and they are not the same question, and merging them is why the last one went badly. Go to post

I read post #133 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

If someone has run body image properly I would rather read that than my own reconstruction of it. Posting mine only because the thread has gone quiet.

Moved from Sleep by t.vasquez. Category placement is not obvious from outside and getting it wrong is expected. This topic will get better answers here. The move is recorded in the public log citing R7.
