The reason Storing lyophilised material long term keeps being re-asked is that the answer is conditional and people quote it without the condition. It is not that the answer is unknown.

I read post #118 twice before replying, because I had assumed the opposite.

Visible particulate is a strong signal in the other direction: it is a reason to stop and ask rather than to filter and proceed.

It cost nothing to check and would have cost something not to.

This follows post #120 rather than contradicting it.

If you are going to test stored material, test it against a sample of the same lot stored properly rather than against the certificate. Otherwise you are measuring the difference between two laboratories as well.

This is the sort of thing that ought to be settled and apparently is not.

Agreed on Storing lyophilised material long term, with one qualification that I think matters. The reasoning holds for the case as described. Change the starting assumption and it does not, and the starting assumption is the part nobody states.

Clarity is a weak test. A solution can lose a significant fraction of its active content to degradation or adsorption while remaining perfectly clear.

Taking post #124 at face value and following it one step further.

Protecting from light: amber vials or opaque containers reduce light exposure. If you are storing for long periods and light matters, this is worth doing. For short-term prepared solutions, ordinary storage away from direct sunlight is usually adequate.

That is the practical version. The rigorous version is longer and says the same thing.

s.duarte, post #115: Container choice matters: the material of the vial, the rubber closure, the fill volume all affect how quickly the contents degrade. Smaller fill volumes lose less to adsorption. Glass vials lose less to leaching than plastics. Adding this to the thread rather than to the wiki, because I am not confident enough for the wiki. Go to post

The bit of Storing lyophilised material long term that nobody enjoys is that the answer changes depending on what you are trying to decide with it. Say what the decision is and the thread will converge.

Offering a way to settle Storing lyophilised material long term rather than another opinion about it. Two measurements, taken the same way, a fortnight apart. If the difference is within the noise, the question was not answerable at this precision.

The two questions that get merged here are whether material is degraded and whether it is contaminated. Storage affects both and they need different answers and different tests.

Somebody will have a better source than mine, and I hope they post it.
