Worth stating the null on bring a laboratory before we explain it: the observation may be nothing. That possibility deserves a sentence and usually does not get one.

Time of day: some biomarkers vary across the day. Cortisol in the morning differs from cortisol in the evening. Comparing results from different times of day is comparing things that are not the same.

One of those cases where knowing the mechanism does not help the decision.

Glycaemic markers integrate over different periods. A point glucose and a longer-term marker disagreeing is not a contradiction; it is two different questions.

I would treat that as a working assumption and revisit it.

Post #133 and I disagree about the size of the effect, not about the direction.

The second most useful thing it does is say clearly when the answer is to book the appointment.

If anyone has run this properly I would rather read that than my own guess.

Small correction to my own earlier position on bring a laboratory. I had the units the wrong way round, which changes the conclusion by an order of magnitude and therefore changes it entirely.

I keep a log for bring a laboratory specifically because my memory of it turned out to be systematically wrong in one direction. Six weeks of notes cost nothing and settled it.

Bringing the actual numbers with intervals to an appointment is far more useful than describing them, and clinicians here consistently say so.

Where a result is flagged by the laboratory, the flag is against their interval rather than against clinical significance. Those are different thresholds. That is all the detail I have. Where the bring a laboratory reasoning breaks down for me is the step from the group result to the individual case. That step is almost never argued for.
